What kind of return could Ovechkin fetch?

I guess more generally, what would the #1 overall pick in this year's draft fetch? Depending on which team gets the pick, it may be more desirable to move him (a la Lindros) than sign him.

Could he, for instance, fetch Pitkanen and Gagne?

I'd say that any GM in his right mind would hang on to him as a franchise player, unless another Lindros for the Avalanche core came by...

The Avalanche core just retired and Lindros wasn't dealt for him.

Maybe Gagne if the Flyers have given up on him, which I doubt they've done, and even then the chances would be slim.

Whoever is lucky enough to draft number 1 is keeping him. End of story.

What if Sather offers the Pens $4 million dollars, Barnaby, Hlavac, and a fringe NHLer?

I doubt any team would deal the 1st overall pick this season. Ovechkin is going to be a really special player and a guy that any team would want to build around...

Could happen though if some team offered an insane package ala Lindros, and the thread is hypothetical anyways, so I'll take a stab at this one just for fun.

1st overall(Ovechkin)
to Edmonton for
1st rounder next 2 years, Rita, Chimera and Hemsky.
or
1st overall(Ovechkin)
to Anaheim for
1st rounder next 2 years, 2nd rounder, Chistov, Mcdonald and Lupul.
or (final shot)
1st overall(Ovechkin)
To Washington for
1st rounder(if it's a top 5), Oullette, Eminger and Zubrus.

I highly, highly doubt any of these happen, but just threw them out there for the sake of it.

Ovechkin will be very special.

It will be a lot to trade him. e.g. Pitkanen, Gagne, and 2 first round picks. maybe more.

If any team makes an offer like any of those, the GM should be publicly flogged.
Especially the Washington one, because if it's a top five pick look at who they're giving up to move 4 spots. Besides, this should be closer to the 2002 draft, so the top 6 or 7 will still be awesome picks.

Talk about overhyping prospects. Pitkanen and Gagne are both franchise players for the Flyers, no way does Clarke trade both of them for one player (who's never even played in the NHL.) That would have been like Florida keeping the 1st pick in 2002 and picking Fleury, then trading Luongo. It's a lateral move at best and there's a chance the pick could be a bust. No GM will trade two PROVEN young franchise players, plus two first rounders for one draft pick. Not gonna happen. Look at the Lindros trade, most of the players were above average, not stars. If Forsberg wouldn't have become the player he is today the Flyers would have won that trade. That is a good indication of what Ovechkin could return: 2 or 3 cheap, young, above average players, the team's 2004 1st rounder, and more picks/prospects/cash.

Does that mean Canucks 1st, Koltsov, Fedorov, Sopel, Cooke/Reid
would get it done? Please don't bash me for throwing out a garbage for Superstar trade, Koltsov, Reid and Fedorov are considered pretty good prospects (Koltsov and Reid more then Fedorov), and Sopel and Cooke are young cheap NHLers as requested. Also, if this would get it done, Canucks do it in a heartbeat, probably even if they wanted all the players mentioned and the 1st.

Really hyped up, people talking of trading franchise players for him, so enticing teams would tank just to get him, supposed to be the next big thing. How do you say in Russian, "Alexandre Daigle"?

Seriously, I'm not implying he'll be the next Daigle, but he's definetely following footsteps Daigle took. Oh well, even if he does, we can all watch him start scoring for the Minnesota Wild in 11 years.

The hype is the same, the person is totally different. Ovechkin seems to be dedicated as hell to hockey and plays a really physical game. Daigle is a peripheral player who was interested in things other then hockey.

I don't think Ovechkin is worth as much as some people are suggesting.

A trade like Gagne, Pitkanen and picks for one player is insane.

Then i would be a fan of the team that gets Cooke and we don't want that to happen. The only way Ovechkin is going to be dealt is if someone overpaid. And that is the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so.

I never knew the team drafting Ovechkin would be guaranteed a Stanley Cup.

I hope you are not refering to my proposal. IMO, to acquire a possible superstar player, you got to give up a lot. I think the Canucks could give up all the players mentioned and not be hurt that bad now or in the future. I think the only proposal that was really huge was Pitakenen and Gagne for Ovechkin. That's just crazy. I could see the Flyers being willing to move Sidenberg and Gagne for Ovechkin though.
