hemsky and shooting

i like hemsky a lot and think he has a VERY good future in front of him, he isnt playing all that great right now but im sure he will turn it around eventually

anyways, the point of this thread is hemskys shot total..... its REALLY low, so i tend to keep track of his shots each game..... against calgary he had a shot that was from the outside (to the left of calgarys goalie) and it hit the goalie in the shoulder.... but when i check the stats hemsky does not get credit with a shot..... i wonder how often this happens

not much to the point of this thread other than to comment on this mistake, but im sure it will turn into a "hemsky should shoot more" thread

10 shots in 16 games. That's pathetic for a top liner, no matter how much he passes. It seems to me that Hemsky only shoots when he is sure of a goal, hence his 3 goals in 10 shots.

was the goalie standing up when the puck hit him, if so its not a shot because it wouldn't have gone in if it weren't blocked by the goalie.

If the goalie was down in the butterfly and it hit him in the shoulder then that is another story.

Hemsky seems to get knocked off of the puck quite easily. The play has ended with him quite often as of late and something should be done to address this.

He's ten pounds lighter than he was last year and really seems to be knocked off around on the low boards quite a bit too. I'm not sold that the solution is Hemmer weighing 20lbs. more, but I think this has a great deal to do with his low shot number. He simply isn't getting in position to take a shot and this ends up being a turn-over at the other teams blue line.

Any thoughts?

To me Hemsky seems to be the one carrying the puck over the line. He needs a playmaking centre who can carry it giving him time to find some open ice. Right now he's with Horcoff and Chimera and Horcoff has, at least for me, earned the PPL nickname. Hemsky has no chance with these guys.

Oh look. Hemsky needs a centre and Lowe provides one - Oates.

How will the signing of Oates effect Hemsky's play? Here are a couple of options (assuming they are both put on a line with Smyth)

1) Oates takes on the role as playmaker of the line and changes Hemsky's mentality of always trying to make the perfect pass.

2) Oates will dish a perfect pass to Hemsky most of the time and Hemsky will be able to get a good shot on net.

3) Hemsky will remain the playmaker and allow Oates to take more of a scoring role.

4) Oates and Hemsky will continue to pass to each other until the goalie falls asleep and Smyth goes in and scores.

I'm thinking of option #1

I was thinking about making a post like this myself, but you saved me from it, jadedog.

I haven't seen ALL of the Oilers games this year, but I've seen most of them, and I've noticed the same thing the CBC guys on Saturday were saying MacT said: he hasn't been shooting a lot, but this year at least, he hasn't been *giving up* many opportunities to shoot. He's not passing instead of shooting this year, because he just plain hasn't been in shooting position much. IMO, the problem this year is fundamentally deeper than just "he's not shooting" or "he looks for a pass first", it's "he's not putting himself in the right spots on the ice". A step back from last year, but he's still a kid, I'm sure he'll come along. Confidence, maybe?
