Oates has maintained his fitness level with intensive off-ice workouts since the end of last season and is excited about getting back on the ice. He says; ďI havenít been able to get much ice time of course, but I donít think it will take me too long to get back to game shape. This is very exciting, being part of a team, which plays with so much offensive flair. It fits my game perfectly.Ē

This from the Oilers email. Sounds like he is pretty excited about playing in Edmonton. Maybe being an offensive minded team has something to do with him coming here.

Excellent, excellent signing. They should have done this last year, but better late than never. And no, I don't think this means a Comrie trade is imminent. Quite the opposite in fact.

and a guy that can win some faceoffs. Great move by Lowe, as long as the contract is decent.
I switch Torres and Smyth, but like your opinion, mine means nothing until MacT does what he does.

Kind of figured that Oates didn't want to be here since he commented once that he wasn't fast enough to play Oilers hockey. Made the comment when he came out of college and was a free agent.

Wonder if he's game ready for Saturday - maybe sooner? Maybe I'll try and get a ticket for the Laughs when they roll into town.

100% agree with metallicat! Oates is a guy who we really need, he is a proven faceoff WINNER and he is a great playmaker! Isn't he the best active faceoff man?? On OUR team? Imagine how much he will help us!! He is kinda sorta of like Hemsky actually, I read in the Journal he only had 60 shots one year, but he gets wayyyy more assists! Smyth-Oates-Hemsky looks pretty good to me. Plus a veteran presence on the ice, how long has it been since we had that? Adam Oates is 41 and he will be a leadership presence maybe? Gosh darn it Lowe broke the mold on this signing! Thank you Kevin! Welcome to Edmonton, Oates! He sounds like he REALLY wants to play here, like Dvorak! Maybe Oates can bring out Isbister's talent?

Anyone ever play EA NHL 2002? My friend and I would do fantasy drafts and he'd ALWAYS end up with the team that had Adam Oates and then he'd turn around and whine about how slow the guy was.

This is just another reason why Lowe is THE GREATEST GM IN HOCKEY. Oates is a man that could have signed almost anywhere, yet Lowe somehow lured him here. What an awesome freaking move. Anyone who dislikes this signing needs to be kicked in the head, hopefully knocking some sense into him. WOW.

And now Mike Comrie, get that tail out from between your legs, suck it up, and put an Oiler jersey on again.

Great lines

Smyth-Oates Hemskey Great offensive line
Torres-York-Dvorak Maybe our best second line since our last cup
Moreau-Reasoner-Pisani One of the top 5 third lines in the league
Isbister-Horcoff-Laraque Great physical line with horcoff in his proper role
Extras: Stoll, Chimera, great depth players
Our foreward lines are fantastic, when everyone is healthy of course
If we can get brad stuart for comrie, and conks can continue his fine play, we're gonna be a very good team (although both of those occurances are unlikely, its nice to dream)

Same deal with the fools comparing Oates to Dopita.

Lowe is the MAN!!!

Smyth-Oates-Hemsky
Torres-York-Dvorak
Moreau-Stoll-Pisani
Isbister-Horcoff-Laraque

Our depth is looking pretty good!!!

Wow, ladies and gentlemen...I think we've broken some sort of record: 57 different people viewing the same thread at one time. It's like clowns in a volkswagon!

You don't suppose somebody hacked the Oilers' site do you?

well, i'm eating crow. this one caught me completely off guard.

i seriously doubt oates will be with the oilers when the playoffs start though. i'm sure he'll be dealt to a serious contender for a pick... i wonder what clarke would give up for him this time? :lol

anyway, this should allow the oilers to make some seriously nice lines when marty gets back...

smyth - york - hemsky
torres - oates - dvorak
moreau - reasoner - pisani
isbister - stoll - salmo/laraque

trade: laraque, comrie, horcoff for defensemen or goaltending!!!

very cool! i just hope they don't expect TOO much from him. he should get 2nd line time at the most.

I don't want to get ahead of myself here...Oates is a great signing, but he isn't bringing Lord Stanley home, far from it. We still have a lot of work to do.

4th line of Laraque, Salmelainen, Pisani, Chimera, Stoll, maybe Isbister.
Trade a couple excess forwards (including the Anchor) for a solid d-man and we're rollin.

Now that team would do some SERIOUS damage. Especially if Isbister picked up his game and got himself on that 3rd line. YIKES!

LawnDemon, I hope they don't break up York and Dvorak, those two play well together.

Oates will make a fine 1st line centre!! And I would bet that he's still with us in the playoff, he was an integral part of helping the Ducks get to the Finals, and we will need that sort of leadership.

Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly why he signed here. I'm sure the opening line in the contract talks was if you sign here we will trade you.

I know it's hard to believe we actually signed someone, but don't go making things up that you know is not even close to being true!

I certainly don't think this signing will get us within a mile of Lord Stanley, but wouldn't it be nice to win the 1st round? I've forgotten what the 2nd round feels like...

Dopita?

Dopita comparisons are ridiculous. Dopita never had a stretch of good games in the nhl. Oates on the other hand has had a great career in the nhl. It's a great deal, but let's not go to far. At 41, this is not the same oates of even five years ago. However, he'll shore up our two biggest weaknesses, faceoffs and the powerplay. As a 19 year old, I have never witnessed a better week for edmonton sports fans.

No doubt about it, but Oates can't play 60 minutes a game, nor can he take all our faceoffs, or be on all the PPs...I hate looking at the negative of this, because I love this move, but I don't think he is our saviour, but he is no doubt a move in the right direction. He can get these young kids to smarten up when they are playing crappy, just because he is Adam Oates.

I'm really happy for Oiler fans. Its been a long time since you guys have heard good news that was based on 'now' instead of always looking to the future.
