I hope they don't try and over use him by giving him 18+ minutes per night, because I think he would be best served as a face-off specialist (take the draw and go to the bench), on the power play, and maybe the odd shift with guys like Smyth and Hemmer, just to keep him in the game. 10-15 minutes per night, depending on the situations.

I'd agree with that... especially when Reasoner draws back in.

If the Oilers roll all four lines then it shouldn't be a problem. Games that have a lot of penalties means the Oilers will have to manage his 5 on 5 play.

wow

Excellent, I never thought the Oilers would add any salary. Good signing, he certainly won't hurt and will add some experience and he is excellent on faceoffs.

It is going to be awhile before he gets into shape but wow I am flabbergasted. Way to go Lowe

From Sportsnet:
"I haven't skated in a while so I'll need at least a week if not two to get ready," said Oates, meaning he'll miss Edmonton's outdoor NHL game against Montreal on Saturday.

Damn. Love to see him here sooner, but it looks like we may have to wait a couple weeks for the Oates debut.

Great move Lowe. Can't wait to see Oates' impact on this team and on the PP.

I could see the team pushing to get him in for Saturday's game. Even if it's just to take draws and play on the powerplay. Surely he could handle the 4 minutes Sarno was playing for a couple of games there.

If not, I'm prepared to wait... as it could be a nightmare if he comes in too early and looks like crap.

an argument over Oates that took place a month ago. Obsessed and MrMackay good for you to be on that original bandwagon guess i should have joined you two to make three then

Can I help you with that crow LD? I gotta pat myself on the back briefly. I even nailed the salary... WOW!!

I love it! Oates made a great decision joining our team.

I pumped my fist in the air when I heard it on my way home from work. I am as stunned as everyone else on this board yet very very pleased.

Thanks K-Lowe you ROCK!! Honorable mention to K-Prendergast and S-Howson for pursuing a definate hole in our Team.

Smart move by Lowe! Signing Oates to one year instead of a multiyear contract works great with me. Look at it this way, Oates can do no worse then 45points with the remainder of the season, he adds depth to a depleted centre corp. and will help out with the dismal powerplay. in a years time when Oates is long and gone...we will have atleast a few of our centre prospects turn out...Guys like Ninimaki, and Pouliot, or jakouv will be ready in three years time (or sooner). We can wait with Comrie until a deal is right (hopefully for Coburn, Lupul, Frolov...either way big return). Very exciting, this could be the stepping stone that Oils need to put together/draft a solid team for many years to come. I still feel Salo can come out of the big hole he's been in for the past year, he's shown brillliance, just gets burned on the dumb plays. Conklin looks to be solid as well, if the two split duties.

KLOWE ROCKS

Count me in also. I'm excited about this. I think we are a better team now from 24 hours ago. A couple more moves to address a couple things and we are seriously lookin good.

this signing is a direct result of getting pisani, smyth, and ethan to sign below market value deals. I posted earlier to day that Lowe has some salary room left to go after Kolzig, he still may if someone takes salo's contract.

Beyond the obvious improvement in our two biggest weaknesses (face-off and pp), this move may have severe repercussions for the roster. I cannot see where lowe can have izzy's 2.2 mill and BG's 1.8 mill on the fourth line. Especially when we can still have a VERY respectable 4th line of horc, chimera, and one of stoll, sarno, or rita. One or both are gone for sure.

There are teams looking to make a playoff push and lowe has maybe the biggest trading chips in the nhl right now. What kind of package could the rangers, flyers, leafs, or stars offer for comrie, BG, and Izzy ? One more injury to detroit and they are in the hunt as well.

Pumped your hand in the air?????? God I was jumping up and down clapping my hands screaming like a little girl (look at my avatar ) Me and my brother were high fiving and all that great stuff (we hardly talk to each other, lol). I don't think i've ever been that excited about anything for the Oilers EVER in my life that wasn't winning a cup or a playoff series.

The dollar at 77 cents has to help as well

All last year it was 65 cents.

12 cents on a dollar when you are talking millions of dollars makes a HUGE difference.

In fact the dollar being at 77 cents as opposed to 65 cents for a year would pay for Oates salary.

Depth doesn't hurt, and I really don't see Oates playing first line centre minutes all season... basically, here is how my lineup works.

Isbister/Oates - Smyth - Hemsky
Torres- York - Dvorak
Moreau - Reasoner - Pisani
Isbister - Horc/Stoll - Laraque

I know Oates is not a winger, I have him slotted there because him and Isbister will both spend about half the time on the top line.

Essentially, Oates is out there for every draw by the top line. So it is Smyth - Oates - Hemsky. But, like I mentioned, we don't want Oates playing top line minutes, so in some draws ( I would say 50% of the 5 on 5/4 on 4 ones), Oates goes off, and Isbister comes on. The main difference is that with Oates taking the face-offs, that is one less thing Smyth needs to worry about.

Also, with Isbister essentially double shifting ( kind of ), he'll get 7-8 minutes on the 1st line, and 7-8 minutes on the 4th line, for a decent 15 minutes per game.

what a day for Oilers fans...

Mess agrees to play in the Heritage Classic
Conks gets defensive player of the week
and
Oilers sign Oates

Holy Threesome Batman...

I literally fell off my chair.

I like the lines everyone has been suggesting but how about this:

Torres-Oates-Smyth (biggest bang for the buck)
Hemsky-York-Dvorak (all the finesse and speed you could ask for)
Moreau-Stoll-Pisani (of course)
Chimera-Horcoff-Salmo (I'm not totally sold on Laraque's new attitude yet)

I bet Comrie is traded before Saturday. I don't know if I believe the Kolzig rumours but Oates was his buddy in Washington.

proposal:
Comrie+Salo to Washington
Eminger+Kolzig+2nd round pick to Edmonton

The problem with your lines is that smyth is usually a left winger, and hemskey is usually a right winger. The advantage, though, is keeping york and dvorak together, while keeping the pass happy hemskey and oates apart. Personally, I'd atleast try Smyth-Oates-Hemskey. With their incredible passing talent, Hemskey and Oates could make an unbelievable playmaking duo, with Smyth as the finisher. Then again, it could fall apart with too much passing and no shooting.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh baby, I just got the news.

Looks like I'm about the last person in Canada but hey, who's counting?

Honestly I was about the last person that wanted Oates to be signed here but I have to admit that I'm very excited about him coming here, and Messier playing in the mega stars game is the icing on the cake. This is a day that no Oiler fan will ever forget.

Looks like the Oil can trade away Comrie for any player at any position except lw now, the pressure on KLo just went down by 50%.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwww wwwww!

This is the first time in the last few years that I've seen the Oil make a 'Now' move. It seems every year its the same 'ol "We're playing for 3-4 years down the road, please excuse us while we trade off core players for potential" I'm not saying this is the final pievce of the puzzle, but I will say it could be the most important piece of the puzzle. We've shored up an offense that was allready shooting out the lights. We still have the Comrie trading chip to shore up the D. And it looks like Ty is gonna put some heat on the starting job.

Not quite. Just heard about it now. All I can say is WOW!!!! Even that smiley does not fully represent what I'm feeling right about now. Oates is no speed demon but the Oilers needed to address a few things which Adam Oates accomplishes.

1) faceoffs
2) reliable "actual" center
3) help on the powerplay

WOW!
