6th d-man to start the season...

So with bouillion out for a while, who do you think will earn the 6th D spot in the lineup come opening day?

- Will Sreit justify the 2 year contract he signed and emerege as a decent NHL caliber player?

- Will we end up with a revolving roster spot with Streit/Cote/Obyrne/??? rotating in and out of the line up because none of them emerge as a steady replacement

- Will pre-season play show Gainey and Carbs that we have a serious problem and force a move to either trade for or sign another D-man?

- Will someone come out of nowhere and turn into a top 4 type guy leaving bouillion without a spot when he gets back? (think Prucha from the rangers or armstrong with the pens last season)

What will it be????

My feeling/hope is that Streit has had enough time to get adjusted to the North American game and emmerges as a clear top 4-5 NHL caliber D-man, giving us some needed depth and potential trading chips.

Streit's injured, I think, though not seriously. The healthy top 5 will probably just play more minutes, and whoever the 6th man is will probably get around 8-10 mins a game in safe situations. At this point, Cote seems to be that guy, and he seems perfectly suited for that role anyway.

Sounds like it will be Streit assuming he is heathly otherwise it is Cote I guess. Bob had a quote in the Gazette saying that he had talked to Wooley, but decided to stay within the organization for now. If it turns out they need a dman, then they will look for that after other teams make training camp cuts.

O'Byrne is not ready for NHL duty, even in a 7th d-man role, for at least another year. It will be Côté and/or Jancevski before any others.

I like O'Byrne and I think he will see some play with the habs sooner or later.

BTW I saw Streit on the ice today.

I think Streit will get more ice time than Cote.

O'Byrne plays on the right side, so he has nothing to do with Bouillon. The right side is set, so he will be in Hamilton unless he can earn a spot as the 7th D man or win a spot over one of Komisarek, Rivet and Dandenault, which would be highly unlikely imo.

I would think Streit will be the guy with Cote as the #7. I'd have no problem seeing Cote get some games in paired with Komisarek but hopefully Streit can improve upon last year. The guy is damn impressive internationally, hopefully he can improve his NHL game, although his lack of strength might make that difficult. Clearly Gainey has some hope for him.

Streit I hope, and Streit I think.

I mean, you all know what I think about Streit. I think this year he starts showing he really belongs in the league and that will happen with more ice time.

I don't believe they'll dress Streit and have him play 30 seconds in the whole game like last year.

I hope Streit, the guy has shown he can play with the best internationally and ever since he arrived i've been waiting for him to translate that to the NHL. Hopefully we'll see it this comming season so I really hope they give him the spot, he's a guy who could potentially surprise.

Am I the only one...?
I didn't just like what i saw in Cote last year...i loved it!
He's safe/smart, very defensive, very big/tall, very physical...
IMO, Cote should get #6 position.

Please don't hate me , but...Streit is so overrated (except when he desperately slides and succeeds to block criss-cross passes. And, because I'm such a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge Hab fan, I'll write, "I hope I'm wrong about Streit!"

Still...
Go Cote Go!
Go Habs Go!

And you think Streit is overrated? I don't know why everyone fell in love with Cote. He was awful as much as he was decent during his call up. Once again, size is far more important than actual talent on HFBoards. How is he on the power play? We can't use a Rivet-Dandenault pairing on the 2nd PP, that won't work.

Streit. The end. Cote will be # 7.

I'd also like to see more of what Streit is made of.

Also, you'd be surprised at how many Swiss tourists want Streit/Aebischer jerseys made.

Dan Jancevski and J.P Cote will battle out for the spot... both have NHL games under their belts - they are my picks!

Let's give a chance to Carle!

Ok, more seriously, we now see the error that the team have done when they put Hainsey on Waiver, he could have been the man to fill the 6th d-man and turn to be a top 4 pairing defensemen after few weeks with the team.

Since he's not anymore with us I think Streit will play game where we need more speed and Cote when we play against opponnent that plays a physical game.

I agree, IMO, It's Coté..

Streit gonna need to fight for his spot and I'm just not sure of who it's ahead right now in the depth chart.

I would take a bet on Côté though.

No hainsey would still be equal to Coté/Jancevski. Its what now 3 years ago? Can we turn the page on Hollyworst already?

Mark Streit is IMO the guy for the role... He"s got offensive skills... He was adjusting last year in the NHL as opposed to the AHL... I saw a better Mark Streit Post Olympics with us... IMO I think he could actually surprise a few around in terms of how talented he actually is... As somebody mentioned, the jerseys are in demand (probably by those who followed him in the Swiss league) He's their national team captain... I would not honestly be that surprised f he became an NHL regular with us this year...
Cote and Jancevski would battle it out for the # 7 fer shure though... Jancevski could surprise a few... he was solid when he played in our organization as a Dallas Star prospect.

I'm already a huuuge fan of Cote, but...

it seems like Cote is injured for now, so...

I hope they give Jancevski a chance

It'll probably end up being Streit, unless...Carbo is not a fan?

I'd still like to know why Dallas gave us Jancevski (or we picked him up)?
I've seen him play a few AHL games and I was quite impressed...
Can he also play on the 2nd PP unit?
