Is this a Tripping Penalty?

During my men's game this weekend I had the puck down low in corner in the offensive end and when the defense men challenged me along the boards his stick went right through the gap of the holder on my skate. This caused me to go down and the ref said it wasn't a tripping penalty.

Something similar to this.

But isn't this tripping? Some of the youtube comments say this is not tripping even though the ref called it tripping.

57.1 Tripping A player shall not place the stick, knee, foot, arm, hand or elbow in such a manner that causes his opponent to trip or fall. Accidental trips which occur simultaneously with a completed play will not be penalized. Accidental trips occurring simultaneously with or after a stoppage of play will not be penalized. If, in the opinion of the Referee, a player makes contact with the puck first and subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no penalty shall be assessed.

Seen it in the NHL and in beer leagues and I never seen it called. I think refs chalk it up to bad luck that the blade went right into the tuuk, sort of like 2 players feet getting tangled up

If it's unintentional or accidental I don't think it should be called and I doubt many would be skilled enough to do it deliberately.

I've wondered about the possibility of popping the trigger on someone in Vapors and seeing what happens. That would be good for a laugh.

I would call that all day every day. Tripping is called if your stick use causes another player to fall, even if accidental.

It is a tripping penalty.

"Accidental" penalties are called all the time. It doesn't matter if you "accidentally" tripped someone, or "accidentally" high sticked someone, or "accidentally" interfered with the goaltender, or "accidentally" hit someone in to the boards from behind.......those are all penalties.

Now, I will say that some refs might be more inclined to let a play like that go if it is away from the action and neither side gains an advantage.

In the YT video, Nash was carrying the puck and Hannan tripped him. Even accidentally that should have been a penalty because he forced a turnover with an illegal act (even without the stick going between the boot and steel, he was still pushing on the skate).

But if the puck was already gone and both players started skating up the ice and Hannan's stick inadvertently got caught in the skate....then, maybe. It should probably still be a tripping penalty, but I've seen refs let it go if it's clearly inadvertent AND behind the play AND neither player gets an advantage (the one player can't stand, the other player is trying to get his stick back).

Then again, I've seen players get high-sticked, cross-checked, and even punched in the face right in front of officials with no call. So just because something is a penalty doesn't mean the ref is going to see it or call it accurately. That's a problem with having flawed humans officiating on a subjective basis.

"A player shall not place the stick...in such a manner that causes his opponent to trip or fall." How in the heck would it NOT be tripping?

If it was like the Nash video then it's pretty clear that it should be called for tripping. They'd call it in my league every single time... unless it was way behind the play obviously.

Because it's beer league and refs aren't looking to hand out penalties because a stick got caught in a holder.
