Popularity to Profits

Well,

I thought I would compile a list of each team's board followed by the number of posts that can be found on that board. We can assume that if fans are active within the boards the teams must be very popular or at least strike a significant chord with said fans. Our Oilers board is #2 which isn't surprising to me considering our storied franchise's history and Canadian address.

It begs the question, though, what if the earnings of teams were consistent with their popularity? Imagine the players we could have kept and brought in over the years. I think with our strong management and style of play our team could very well have been on its way to more dynasties and we wouldn't have to keep looking back to the 80's to guide us into the future. Surely the Canadiens could very well be in the same boat we are - albeit - with a much more storied past.

1) Montreal Canadiens 30,083
2) Edmonton Oilers 25,633
3) Boston Bruins 17,539
4) Vancouver Canucks 17,364
5) Toronto Maple Leafs 16,026
6) New York Rangers 13,536
7) Pittsburgh Penguins 10,621
8) Philadelphia Flyers 6,053
9) Nashville Predators 5,798
10) New Jersey Devils 5,709
11) Colorado Avalanche 5,650
12) Buffalo Sabres 5,522

15) Detroit Red Wings 4,039
16) Phoenix Coyotes 3,920

While this is interesting, there are so many things outside just number of fans around Canada that influence EDM's profitability. 75% of the NHL's profits come from ticket sales. This hurts EDM becuase Northlands can only hold, what 16-17,000.

Another thing to consider is the fact that there may be a tonne of posts on a certain part of this site, but if I make 12 posts a day under CHI's board, they become instantly more popular. It's even more misleading when you consider that posters post all over the place, even if they aren't a fan of that team; I have been known to post in the VAN, CGY, hell even BUF's board.

Gah, my brain hurts ... I had more to say, but meh.

Not to mention things like corporate sponsorships, ticket prices, arena deals, etc...

Yeah, Edmonton has a decent sellout rate... but what if the average ticket price wasn't $75 (sorry guys a guess here), and was say $160 like it is in T.O.?

That is a big factor too.

Interesting, but not true.

Case in point Dallas, number 28 on your list, but have sold out a ridiculous number of games. Same with Columbus and Minny - both in the bottom third of that list, but top 10 in attendance.

if this was the only internet forum for hockey, then the numbers would have some significance.

Does this mean that Calgary does not have the fan support that Edmonton has.

They are 23. with 2,167 posts. Some of the posrts are from us because i've posted there on game day.
