This contract is a ridiculous steal when you consider how many minutes Hamhuis plays for the Predators. He'll be kicking himself in a couple years realizing he likely could have earned a lot more cash.
I'm not so sure. The compromise is Dan will be an unrestricted free agent at 27-28 years old. He will make his money.
Great news that Hamhuis signed. He's obviously a very important member of this team. Obviously the logical thing to happen next - if you are reading between the lines - is that Hartnell will get dealt so the Preds don't lose him without getting anything in return. Is Jack Johnson still available from Carolina? Anyone think he could be involved in a deal for Hartnell?
Yes they would. They would get less, but would still get a piece.
I know it doesn't work this easily but, if they maxed out thier share from this past season and the Preds are supposed to use that extra money for player costs what's the big deal if they are slightly over their cap by the end of this season? They have a team on the cusp of a Conference Finals appearance. I understand the need to move Hartnell unless an extension is reached but, to make moves to get under a self-imposed cap at the expense of talent doesn't seem logical at this point for this team. Other than to say, "Hey, we can be the Minnesota Twins of the NHL."
