Just wondering if you fans would think this following deal would be fair?
Preds gets: Gomez, Hale, 4th
NJ gets: Hartnell, Kline/Parent, and Legwand, 3rd
I think this would be a good trade for both teams. Preds get a hard nose dman that can play better than Yonkman/Henry and they would have a centers with a great blend of size and skill (Arnott, Gomez, Vasiceck, Smithson/Nicol). Losing Hartnell would be ok with the signing of Dumont and the promotion of Upshall.
As for NJ they would get closer under the cap. They can play decent dman prospect in their minors that wont count against the cap. Legward isnt near the level of Gomez, but hes young and a change might help him. Hartnell's value isnt as high since hes a UFA next year, but he can play a 2 way game that NJ likes to play.
I would think that as the deadline approaches, NJ players might be had for a premium, mayby not on the scale of Roenick to LA but, teams aren't going to want to give up much for a NJ salary dump, even if it was Gomez. How many teams are lining up for his services currently? Not that having Gomez on your team is a bad thing.
This trade would ONLY happen because of the Devils need to remove salary. Therefore, the Preds would not have to return 'equal' quality players for the trade to be made. Its called a salary dump for a reason and fair trades aren't part of the equation.
Big over payment from the Preds on this, regardless of Gomez being a #1 center and Hale being a 2nd line quality Dman.
I don't want to go after Gomez because he's UFA next year. Too much to give up for a guy you could lose for nothing.
I also don't think there is anyway we'd take on that kind of salary at this point. I do think that Kariya could be gone after this year, giving us some room to work with next year. Possibly could pick up him via UFA.
If we give up assets like this, I think we should be gunning after a young center (or center prospect). I still think we might be able to play our cards right and snag either Jeff Carter or Mike Richards. Bob Clarke makes changes quickly when his team is sucking. I'm still holding out hope for a scenario like that.
