Why do hockey players spit all the time?

I mean seriously, why do they have to spit?

In basketball nobody spits. Same thing in volley-ball, or handball. Obviously, pro athletes don't need to spit to perform well.

But in soccer, baseball and hockey players spit.

What if we all started spitting around, in our homes, at work, and so on?

It's ridiculous.

Stop the spitting!

PS. Just a little more than a week left before the season!

I've spit on the floor several times when I was younger. If you do it too much when you're outdoors then it's an easy mistake to do.

EDIT: The reason that they don't spit in volleyball and basketball etc. is because it's on floor. For some reason people feel more comfortable with spitting on the ground and ice.

It's because you get alot of lactic acid in your throat and your spit becomes really thick and sticky and hard to swallow.

If you spit on a hard surfaced floor, people will slip. Spitting on the ice and grass is safe.

the mouthguards can collect a lot of saliva as well, which just pools up and gets icky. not something you always want to swallow.

i'm surprised that no one has mentioned they do spit in basketball and volleyball and such... they do it much the same way as in boxing i believe... in a bucket

and you dont want to consume alot of fluids while competing or you cramp up... but you also need to continue "wetting your whistle" because as previously mentioned by others there is a build up of lactic acid and your saliva grows thick and it becomes harder to swallow

just an act or self preservation... much like going to teh bathroom its gross but you have to do it

Rikjaard was pretty good, just ask Voller who got two massive greenies stuck in his 80s perm.

Here he is winding up for one.

Most people have to spit when playing sports but there are some players that clearly have it as a habit and cannot stop spitting even if there is nothing to spit.

Not bad, 18 replies so far and the word 'swallow' has only shown up twice.

spitting is disgusting? are you also profoundly offended by burping and farting? are they all forms of improper behavior? describe for us, if you will, just how irritated these things make you
