Playmaking Centers

In the early days of the NHL and the pre-NHL days, centers were primarly goal scorers. Due to the no forward pass rule, playmaking was more difficult and thus not as important an attribute as goal scoring.

So, I'm wondering, after the rule change, what player popularized the role of the playmaking center?

My gut reaction is Joe Primeau, but I'm curious to read other opinions.

The greatest playmakers back in the day were Frank Boucher, Bill Cowley and Elmer Lach.

It's interesting with Frank Boucher, you can really see the effect the rule changes had on his numbers.

And it's amazing how much they increased scoring in general.
