I'm relying on the "Manchester Contingent" to call me crazy.

A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:

1. If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

2. An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.
Ryan and Kanko have to either play 65 NHL games or play two more seasons (they're both 22) before they are considered graduated. Giuliano is four seasons removed from college and was considered graduated after the 2004-05 season.

It's a very good read, but I think perhaps Ryan Murphy is undervalued, as he did spend the entire last season with Manchester, and although his offensive prowess appears to be limited, he shouldn't have that much difficulty nailing down a roster spot because of his speed and AHL experience.

Also, of course, the goaltending situation was never really going to be as portrayed in the article. A "veteran" goalie (read: Labarbera, Garon) was always a part of the mix based on the fact that trade efforts (Garon) have been unsuccessful for quite some time. While the team is a development situation for the Kings, it is doubtful that they would allow such suspect depth to supply the foundation for their kids. You build from the net out, and placing the burden on totally unproven commodities like Munce, Taylor and Fukufuji seems unlikely. Brust showed some periods of adequacy last season, but with Hauser there to split time, it was a little less of a burden. Brust didn't seem like he had taken "a next step" in training camp, so I can't imagine he can be considered much more than an AHL-ceiling guy. I realize that the Kings have placed their chips on Bernier, and so it may be less of a concern over the next season or two, but Manchester does have to compete to continue to fill the Verizon, so I would hope solid goaltending is a priority for Hextall and Co.

Fantastic read, David. I only wonder about the net. Seems very tenuous.

Does make you wonder about the defense. If or when 2 guys on the King roster goes down on D, who can replace them? Makes me believe a trade will be made to bolster the D some. Petiot is a big loss imo.
