Salo good as gone after this season

This has more to do with Staios signing long term than it does with the play of Conklin.

Salo is slated to make 4M in the club option years on his contract starting next season. Staios isn't getting the big raise until next year, so it's fair to say that his increase, and those of Smyth and co. will force Tommy to 1. leave town or 2. take a big pay cut to stay in E-town (a little embarrassing). Thoughts?

I would assume that Conklin and another goalie will share duties next season, a la the Minnesota model.

Are you sure. I thought I read that Staois' contract was reworked for this season.

Staios
this year $1.9million(upped from $1.2)
year 1 $1.9million
year 2 $2.15million
year 3 $2.15million

so he got a $700,000 raise on this year then signed for an additional 3 yrs. at the above rates.

I was wondering if some of the $7 million would include a signing bonus. Reward his strong play, give him a few extra bucks to put in his pocket right now as opposed to after the lockout...

Anyways, I'm on the same page as H4PM. $4 million for Salo next season seems like a bad investment, and there's just no reason for the Oilers to pick up that option. They'll decline it, and either use Comrie to acquire another goalie or sign somebody (maybe even Salo himself) at a more reasonable salary.

Staios' contract includes an $800,000 signing bonus for this year, from what I heard.

Here's the details of the deal (thanks to YKOil at Oilfans)

$ 800,000 signing bonus paid 2003/04 year

$ 2,000,000 .. 2004/05
$ 2,125,000 .. 2005/06
$ 2,125,000 .. 2006/07

I read this breakdown as well, either in the Journal or Sun. Looks OK to me, esp. considering he's our #1 defenceman in minutes played, and was set to become a UFA this summer...!

Agreed. Great deal by KLo, to get this guy locked up at reasonable dollars.

Well if we can sign Smith long-term for the same kind of deal as Staios, Smyth and Moreau (more years / less dollars) that locks up our veteran second pair of dmen. Then Brew and Semi can hopefully evolve into the dominant first pair we need. We have tons of options for the 5/6/7 slots. This is a bigger signing than you would think on the surface - it really takes the heat off Lowe do do something with the defense in the short-term. Just like the Oates deal relieved a lot of pressure to get a center immediately.

MC will be sitting until Lowe gets his deal - of this I have no doubt.

Some rumors here in Sweden say that Salo will join up with Peter Forsberg when he returns to his club (i think after this season)

Tommy and Peter has become good friends after nearly 10 years in the NHL.

Do you guys think tommy has any value on the market right now, or is he too expensive, and who would he be traded for ?

right now it's very low, & it's pretty much a buyers market for goalies, as Cujo is avail from Detroit, when Turek gets back from injury (2 months time) Calgary will have 3 goalies & will probably look to trade one, Atlanta would like to move Dafoe, i think there are 2 or 3 other teams who are looking to move a goalie...cant remember

but Salo hasn't played well this season so far, until he plays another 10-15 games & can get back into form, his value is very low & his 3.9 mil salary makes him that much more unattractive..especially when Detroit said they'd eat up a portion of Cujo's salary, he'd be the better option rather then Salo.

i get the feeling as well this is the last year we will see salo in net for the oilers. his play of late does not justify the salary he is earning and as the oilers are cost conscious, salo will not fit into next years budget.

I don't know if he'll be back but we certainly won't pick up his option. Even if he returns to form, he makes too much money for, at best, an inconsistent preformer. He might return if he accepts a big pay cut (which he might have to, I don't know if any other team will want to give him any kind of significant money).
