who are the best young goalies who are not currently starters? Guys who are stuck behind an existing starter and is waiting for their chance to become a star?

My two favourites are Garon and Gerber with Noronen just a half-step back from them.

Tellquist isnt in the same class as guys like garon or noronen but he could become a solid nhl starter.

Ouellet is still stuck in Portland due to money issues with the Caps...otherwise he would be the back up behind Kolzig and getting in maybe every 4th or 5th game.

I think if Hurme ever gets the chance he'll emerge as a starter! I mean heck, he replaced Luongo nearly seemlessly last year when called upon. Before that he was also great in FLA. Although his stamina might not be able to handle a 65+ game load, I think that a team with a dependable back up (Oilers with Conklin) would be well served by Hurme is 55-60 games/year. This guy was GREAT at the olympics for Finland too, and stood on his head against Canada in the playoffs (if he wouldnt' have played so good it coulda been 4 or 5 to 1).

looking forward to seeing Auld in the NHL in a year... Hedberg is here for just one year, and Auld should be ready to backup next year - and possibly take the starting role soon after.

he's really impressed so far in his brief time in the NHL.

as far as stars go though... Luongo is my bet for the next best goalie in the nhl (after Brodeur's rein is over in a few - 4-5 - years).

The CBJ have Pascal LeClaire in the AHL right now. Obviously he isnt playing the back up roll... which at this point is good for him, he gets more playing time and can improve himelf on a less-pressure stage.

He had a horrible year last year, in his first pro season. This year he has been outstanding. He may get a few starts later in the year, if he continues to play the way he is. But if Denis or Freddy B. gets injured, look for Pascal to make the jump...

He playing like a different goal tender this year... Starting to show why we drafted him...

Still say that Dan Blackburn is going to be a good one.

It's not that easy to keep the goal in montreal but Garon is doing a fine job. When he was drafted, he was supposed to have more potential than Theodore, so I think he'll get a chance as a #1 someday.

Gerber and Bryzgalov for Anaheim, both have #1 goalie potential
Gerber could probably step in right now, while Bryz may need some more seasoning

What I was going to say. Once Eddie retires, Tellqvist is probably going to be the starter

Gerber is also 28ish.. not old but not young compared to some of the goalies in the thread.

Robert Esche will likely be our starter sooner than later and he will emerge as one fo the elite. His play has gotten a lot better this year and his numbers prove it. I'm just curious to see what kind of punch he can deliver in the post season.

no doubt- he's the man. also, hannu toivonen for boston. he's not as well-known as some of these other goalie prospects, but you'll know his name soon enough.

Fitting the criteria I would go with Miller as well. I don't think John Graham gets enough love either, he will be a really good starter one day.

Don't forget about Blackburn either. And the Conkmyster has been fairly solid for the Oilers.

Very bold statement, have you ever heard of Kari Lehtonen?

I'm glad someone finally mentioned Ray "Rayzor" Emery (GO PIERRE HEDIN). He will be a #1 goalie in the near future, replacing Lalime. I can't wait to see when some forwards start crashing his net. Sort of has the same temper as a Ron Hextall.

that is not entirely accurate. there is no indication what so ever that the capitals have any intention or starting a backup goalie on any kind of regular basis. no matter who it is. as long as the capitals are trying to get back in the playoff race, they will not roll out the backup goalie again until they have to. Max is still in Portland because his NHL salary is 3 times that of Stana's and neither Ouellet nor Stana were going to do anything more than sit on the bench. If Kolzig were hurt and going to miss a week, Max would be called up and get the starts.

One more point....I've only gone thru 4 or 5 posts on the subject of the best young goalie, but no one has mentioned Fluery. how can you mention Caron or Garon or Ouellet before you mention Fluery?
