It's official...Rexall Place

The Edmonton Oilers and Katz Group Enter 10-Year Marketing Agreement
Oilers Home Arena Renamed Rexall Place

Edmonton -- The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club and Edmonton-based Katz Group Inc., Canada’s largest pharmacy retailer, today announced a 10-year sponsorship and marketing agreement under which Katz Group will own the naming rights to the Oilers’ home arena and serve as exclusive health care partner.

The centrepiece of this agreement is Rexall Place, formerly known as Skyreach Centre. Rexall Place is the home of the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club and other exciting sports and entertainment events, including the 2004 Bank of Montreal Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the 2004 Juno Awards and the 2004 Canadian Country Music Week. The changeover to Rexall Place will begin immediately, as the Edmonton Oilers continue their 25th Anniversary season in the National Hockey League.

Rexall, Katz Group’s private label, lies at the heart of Katz Group’s strategy for launching the Rexall brand across more than 1,500 pharmacies in Canada. One of the oldest and most trusted names in Canada, Rexall has offered quality health care products since 1904. Rexall will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2004 with the launch of innovative new product lines and an aggressive advertising campaign.

“The Edmonton Oilers couldn’t be happier about joining forces with Katz Group and the Rexall brand. Combining the phenomenal strength of Canada’s No. 1 pharmacy retailer with the power of the Oilers loyal fan base is an exciting opportunity,” said Patrick LaForge, President & CEO of the Edmonton Oilers. “There is no question that Rexall Place will soon become a landmark hockey and entertainment facility known across North America.”

“As an Edmonton-based company, Katz Group is very proud to be a strong community partner of the Edmonton Oilers,” said Daryl Katz, Chairman, Katz Group Inc. “The Oilers stand for everything great about hockey, health and active living. They are great ambassadors for the Rexall brand. Our affiliation with the Oilers will go a long way toward our goal of establishing Rexall as the premier health care brand in Canada.”

In addition to the naming rights, the partnership includes extensive branding, marketing and advertising programs. These include television and radio advertising on Oilers’ broadcasts, and extensive tie-ins to Oilers publications, edmontonoilers.com, and team facilities.
Rexall Place is the second major sports naming rights sponsorship signed by Katz Group in 2003. In May 2003, Katz Group and Tennis Canada announced Katz Group’s 10-year sponsorship for Rexall Centre, Canada’s new National Tennis Centre slated to open in summer 2004 in Toronto.

Katz Group Inc. is one of Canada’s largest privately owned companies, among the largest chain drug store companies in North America, and is the largest pharmacy retail network in Canada. Pharmacy banners include Pharma Plus Drugmarts, Pharmx Rexall Drug Stores, Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies, Guardian, I.D.A., Meditrust, and Herbies/Payless. PharmAssist™ is Katz Group Canada's professional services brand and program uniting Katz Group pharmacies under one nationally recognized symbol of excellence in pharmacy care. Katz Group Inc. also owns the Snyder’s Drug Stores chain in the U.S. Midwest and Drug Trading Limited subsidiaries D.C. Labs Limited and ProPharm Limited in Canada. For more information on Katz Group pharmacies visit www.pharmassist.ca.

Rexall Place

Doesn't have the same ring to it as skyreach centre. Hopefully the oilers are gonna make some major coin off of this. I'm sure we will soon come to accept the new name. I remember skyreach sounded weird the first time I heard that too.

Should I start the petition to get it changed to Coliseum before they get the name up on the side of the building?

Place??? What is it an office building? A food court???

Nice to see we have a long-term cash deal though. Good for the team.

No ones going to put a more positive spin on this aside from money? Rex=King in Latin
I like to think of it as "King of All Place" (ya I know pretty geeky )

They also sell lots of vitamins and nutrionist stuff like Met-Rx we should get discounts or freebies(maybe even secret prototype stuff ) on a lot of that stuff for the guys. Also some top of the line scientists and nutrioinists too, to give advice and supplements/diet plans to increase strength and energy for the players.

edit: a little dirt-

what about "The Kats Krib", or "The Katz Meow" those are much funnier than the one they chose, and seeing as how they were looking for the most retarted name to put on the building, i think they overlooked these ones

I vote for Crack House!

Drug Den is cool but Crack House has more of a stigma attached.

"exclusive health care partner"

Sounds like they will be very heavily involved with the Oilers should be a huge chunk of cash can't wait to here. I guess this is why K.Lowe is tossing the cash around like its going out of style.

Hell, I'll throw enough Rexall logos on my car to make it look like something out of NASCAR if it meant we could keep our top players. Shill, baby shill!

I'd REALLy like to know what we are getting paid! It MUST be alot for a TEN year contract! I mean they wouldn't take an average offer for SUCH a long time frame, would they?!?! But hey, it's just a name, call it the rex-center for short, that isn't so bad.

Hate to tell you - Rexall and Rexall Sundown aren't the same company. Rexall is Canadian (Edmonton, actually), while Rexall Sundown (who are facing legal action) are based in Boca Raton, Florida. The local Rexall seems squeaky clean. But if they're funding the "Crack House" for the next ten years, it won't last.

I think we should call it the Rek Room. BG can also mess guys up and earn the drug company more money, get the Oil a cut of the profits.

maybe the drug company can sponsor laraques' Rap show on the radio. Could make for some interesting ads.

It seems to me that the biggest selling pharmaceutical out there right now (legallly) is viagra. Perhaps we could work that into the name. I can here Rod saying to morley - "We are here at the Viagra Dome for tonights game. The boys seem to be really up for this one."

The Rexall name is fine - and the link to the Katz Group and family is one of the most positive moves the Oil have made on the business side of things. Pat Laforge proves once again that he can deliver - we may have the best President in the league.

But "Place"???? What's with that?
