Not even a question, Mike Foligno's bicycle helmet
I was just talking to my brother the other day about those helments. He was telling me that he and his friends used to play a drinking game where you had to name all of the NHLers who wore "the sphere."
Foligno was definately one of them. Other noteables included Lanny McDonald (aka Loony McSphereson), Robbie Ftorek, and Stan Mikita.
I'd be willing to bet that not one of these guys ever had concussion problems.
I think the helmet Messier wears (and Buchburger and McCarthy too I think) is the worst. Looks like someone took an industrial molding from some other type of product, put foam inside it and called it a hockey helmet.
The 80's / mid-90's Jofa "Alien Skull" helmet gets honorable mention. Selanne still wears a Jofa helmet, but it's the newer one that doesn't look as ******** (pretty sure anyway).
Didn't they use a Mark Messier-like helmet in the movie TRON?
When I was about 8 years old (early 80's) I and most of my team had those helmets.
By far the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn, unfortunately they stopped making them.
Pretty stylish too.
I agree. Most comfortable helmet ever except it made you look like the freakin Great Gazoo. The butch goring was a classic. Have an old Cooper SK10 that is similar to "The Butch" its metallic gold and is great during shinny to start a few conversations.
The Old Cooper XL-7 that teams changed the front and back to match team colors back in the early 80's was horrible. A lot of junior teams wore them. They had those stupid idiot tabs on the side to adjust them and came with the built in cage for younger players. Just plain ugly.
I was wrong about Selanne: he still wears that old "alien skull" Jofa we have mentioned. I think it's Jagr who I'm thinking of (that went from the old one to the newer variant -- has a sort of swept back cross bar thing on the top. Like a spoiler.
