European Captains

Has a team captained by a non north american player ever won the stanley cup??

I can't remember any instance of this, though I've only followed the NHL since the early 90s. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Disclaimer: I'm not a bigot; I have nothing against European players. I'm a huge fan of players from these countries, and mine is a question of pure curiosity.

Nope, but Euro captains haven't been around for more than a few years. The first time there were mutliple European captains in the league were 1997-98 with Mats Sundin in Toronto and Mikael Renberg in Tampa Bay.

Stan Mikita was captain of the Blackhawks back in the 70's.

here is an article on the very same subject. Since 1938 there has only been one
non-Canadian captain to win the cup and that was D. Hatcher( American) in 99 for the Stars

It's only a matter of time now before a European-Captained team wins the Cup. The number of European captains is increasing all the time. Looking at a list:

Jagr (new this year)
Koivu
Sundin
Timonen (new this year)
Jokinen
Norström
Näslund
Elias (new this year)
Chara (new this year)
Alfredsson
Yashin (trying not to laugh)
Forsberg
Lidström (new this year)

You see that not only are almost half the captains in the NHL European these days, but they're also the captains of some of the leading teams.

Boston gave Chara the C??? I was almost positive it was an A, and they plan on giving it to him in the future.

Also, don't forget Ovechkin is most likely the next captain in Washington, whenever he chooses to accept the role.

Which brings me to my next question... How many Euro captains have the Rangers had? I can't really think of any.

How about only Jagr?

If I'm not mistaken the only euro captains before 1997 were Stan Mikita (Chicago 1975-77), Lars-Erik Sjoberg (Winnipeg 1979-80), Alexander Mogilny (Buffalo 1993-94).

Thats what I was thinking, but articles would mention him being the 24th captain but nothing about being the first European captain.

Also Thomas Steen was the captain (or co-captain) for the Winnipeg Jets 1989 - 1991
