Thanks for the info. I don't remember the article but it seems to me that in that era, there were an awful lot of cheap shot artists starting with Ken Linseman.
That was the end of Salming's career and I've never heard anything else about Salming like that. Maybe he did a few things but considering the other dirty players in the league at that time, to me, Salming was an angel.
Are you sure they don't mean Tomas Sandstrom or Ulf Samuelson? Those are are Swedes most linked to cheap shots. It just can't be Salming.
No, it was Salming. I agree that there were other players in the 80s who were worse than Salming. Linseman is definitely one of them, he had a penchant for letting his teammates mop up his incidents, although Linseman was a pretty good player when he wanted to be. Garth Butcher was another player cited in the survey. I remember there was something said about pretty much the entire Flyers team having problems, with Hextall and Tocchet among the worst.
The dirtiest thing about Salming was his mouth. If you ever saw a Leaf game at ice level, you heard Borje curse worse than a sailor. He had good reason, and he would have to draw this stick a couple of times a game just to let someone know that he wasn't going to take an idle spear.
Ovechkin reminds me of a cross between Mike Gartner and Selanne. He has the stooped, crouched skating style of Gartner with the hands of Selanne.
