Trivia- who was the oldest goalie to play ?

I remember of several goaltenders who played until the age of 41.

They are:

Terry Sawchuk, Petr Briza, Dominik Hasek and Eddie Belfour.

Glenn Hall and Jarmo Myllys catched until age of 40, Irbe was there until 39.

Do you know anyone older ?

Johnny Bower retired at 46 as the oldest goalie to ever play. He didn't even solidify his spot as the leafs starter until age 34 (ish) I believe. Don't think anyone since him has played to an older age.

It's Bower, who was even older than Lester Patrick when the then-coach stepped into the Rangers' goal during the Cup Finals.

Bower is also the only NHL goaltender in history to be eligible for an NHL pension while still an active player.

Plante was playing in the WHA in 1974-75 when he was 46.

I think Moe Roberts was the oldest when he appeared as an injury replacement goalie in 1951. Can`t say for sure because there was some doubt about Johnny Bower`s actual age when he played.

How old was Lynne Patrick when he had to go in for the Rangers? Mid forties I think..

Moe Roberts was also 46 when he played one game in 1951-52 so it's either him or Johnny Bower followed by Lester Patrick and Jacques Plante in the NHL.

I found twelve 40 year old goalers in all when I looked it up here. (with help from the other posters on that thread).

just recently in a Federal Hockey League game...A goalie by the name of Peter Maro played for the Danbury Whalers. He will be 47 in 2 months according to the stat sheet. Maybe the oldest goalie if you count minor pro

So did Jacques Plante... He played in the WHA with the Oilers when he was 46.

Isnt there still some confusion over Bowers "real age"?. Some of the records Ive read claim he was 44 when he retired; others 46 which would tie him with Plante (if we include the WHA). The oldest player ever however was a Trainer with Chicago by the name of Moe Roberts who had to fill-in for an injured Lumley in 51 at the age of 47... I guess that doesnt really count though, much like Patrick in NY.

We cover Roberts earlier in the thread - he was "only" 46.

Ooops, I see Chili mentioned him... The source I referenced claimed 47. As per your encyclopedic knowledge of goaltenders & interesting website, has Bowers real age been ascertained?. Legend has it he lied about his age to gain entry into the service or something to that effect, never corrected. Was he 44 or 46 when he retired?.

I was going to say Plante also, I remember the pic of him in an Alberta Oilers uniform.

Not the oldest, but I'm surprised at the lack of mention of Roloson in the OP's post.

He turned 42 in October.

Bruce Gamble was only 34 years of age when he retired but he looked at least 50.

Devils goalie coach and former NHL goalie Chris Terreri played one game for the AHL Albany River Rats on emergency basis in 2006 - he was 42. He played for 40 minutes and allowed 4 goals on 31 shots.

You probably didn't see him because, at the time of the OP, he had just turned 37.
