Weiss has potential?

I'm not a panthers fan so I don't know much about your players but do you think that Stephen Weiss still has potential or is he a bust.

I wanted him when he was first drafted but he was doing so little I forgot all about him.

He was taken 4th overall 5 years ago and hasnt done much. He also seems to get injured quite a bit.

Stats:
Regular Season
Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM

1999-00 Plymouth Whalers OHL 64 24 42 66 35 Good for a rookie.

2000-01 Plymouth Whalers OHL 62 40 47 87 45 Better .

2001-02 Plymouth Whalers OHL 46 25 45 70 69 quit to play in the nhl.

2001-02 Florida Panthers NHL 7 1 1 2 0 not very good.

2002-03 Florida Panthers NHL 77 6 15 21 17 terrible season but joe thornton also had a bad first season.

2003-04 San Antonio Rampage AHL 10 6 3 9 14 not even a point per game in the minors.

2003-04 Florida Panthers NHL 50 12 17 29 10 His future looked pretty bright considering there was low scoring that year.

2004-05 San Antonio Rampage AHL 62 15 23 38 38 third professional season and not getting any better.

2004-05 Chicago Wolves AHL 18 7 9 16 12 had a good finish.

2005-06 Florida Panthers NHL 41 9 12 21 22 got injured but still no sign of inprovement.

NHL Totals 175 28 45 73 49 I'm no expert but that doesn't look very good.

Or I may be wrong and he is a defensive forward. what do you think?

I think highly of Weiss, while we had him for the little time we did last year before he got sidelined with a wrist injury ,he seemed to be doing really good, I think if he picks up were he left off last season, he is in check for an awesome season

with that being said there are articles saying Weiss has been training very hard this off-season to make this year "his year" do I think he can be a great center? h*ll yeah, I think he will breakout this year if he is given the ice time with out a doubt, and if he stays healthy im expecting 65-70 points.

I think very highly of his potential. You're probably familiar with Horton. Weiss has a simmilar ceiling in my eyes. The problem as you figured out is his injury proneness.

Olli is are #1 center though for for the next 4 years, so look for Weiss to evolve into a very solid 2nd line center if he can get past the injury bug and continue to improve

Weiss was really starting to step it up before he got injured, especially on the powerplay. There was one game in particular against Montreal in the Bell Centre where he scored 2 goals and an assist. That was where I could really tell he was stepping up his play.

Weiss makes a huge difference on special teams. His absence was felt when he went down.

Niuewyndyk (sp) being on this team should really help Weiss become the player he has the potential to become, Olesz as well. I think Roberts benefits guys like Stewart and Horton.

People seem to forget that Weiss was a point/game player for a long stretch of the season in the Old NHL. That at least shows that he has the potential to score at the NHL level.

I think Weiss is going to explode next season. I'm talking 70-over a PPG.

Stephen Weiss Projections

What type of season do you guys expect Weiss to have?
I was thinking he might be your second line center and have a breakout year finally.
I see Neiuwendyk is the second line center right now.
What do you guys think Weiss will do this season in terms of goals, assists, PP points. Also, when, I mean, if, Nieuwendy gets injured, is Weiss the guy who moves up. Yes, this is a fantasy motivated question, so if that bothers anyone, sorry. Thanks for any input, opinions, etc.

How about we make a "how will the Panthers players do" thread so that way we can have everyone go in there and ask.

Right! We get at least three of these a week, all on different players.

Regarding Weiss, I expect him to have a good season. He is healthy, in great shape, and ready to fulfill his potential IMO. He is slated to center the third line, but with the talent we have at forward, he could center any line and still put up a lot of points. Expect him to play the 2nd PP unit, as well as PK situations. We need him to be a big contributor this season in order for us to make this season special.

Agree, and hopefully he'll stay healthy. He really made a difference on special teams, looking forward for that to increase. The Panthers were ranked 7th in 5-on-5 play but fell to 21st (I believe it was) due to special teams. I think having guys like Allen and Salei and keeping the vets and Weiss healthy will change that.

We tried that last season and stickied it but people rarely used it. We still got the individual threads.

Yeah, unfortunately some people's theme songs are the scarecrows' song in Wizard of Oz.

I'll be honest with you and most people on this board will highly disagree with me.

Stephen Weiss is a bust. He's injury prone and will not play more than 3/4 of the season (62 games). If he does, I swear I'll leave these boards forever.

I'm telling you guys, this is THE season for Weiss. I've always liked his style, and he clearly has that extra something. But I also believe he is not the kind of player that can shine on a struggling team like we have been for as long as I can remember.. Now that we are finally going to the playoffs and further, I believe he will make us proud!

and yes we are going to the playoffs!!!! right???

It's funny. On draft day, Jacques Martin wanted Weiss at number 2 (behind Kovalchuk). He wanted him bad.

Upper-management ignored him and went with Spezza.
