NHL Store coming soon...

This might have slipped under the radar, but check out Stan Fischler's Bluelines column at MSG Network's Rangers page.
Your thoughts?

MSG Network's Rangers page (October 16):
Bluelines (10/16): NHL to open first store; Crosby making Gretzky look good

An interesting sideline to Bettman, Inc.'s marketing thrust is the league’s decision to open
its first NHL Store in Manhattan. The showplace will debut once the circuit’s upcoming move
two blocks south on Sixth Avenue takes place.

I always wondered why there wasnt a NHL store in the city, maybe what Stan is saying is true and they will actually open a store. I hope they do.

Great to see that Bettman likes NYC when it suits him.

Either way, it's a start in the NHL increasing their brand exposure by having a store to sell
their officially-licensed merchandise. The NBA does it, so why not the NHL? To me, it's about time they do.

Maybe we'll see it later this season. I'd be surprised if it's right in the vicinity of the Garden
given Gerry Cosby's located there, but that shouldn't stop them. The NHL needs this badly
considering you have to look much harder to find widely accessible locations and retail outlets
to track down NHL merchandise. I'm talking about for the average person to find.
We know hockey fans may think it's easy to find already, but we know where to look.

I guess we'll see what happens in the coming months how this business venture unfolds.

I think the all mighty maven is talking about NHL employees and office are moving from their current location on 6th ave and (not sure what cross street) to 6th ave and (two blocks south of current cross street). I know NHL HQ is on 6th ave.

what does Gerry Cosby have to do with this?

i think it HAS to be near the garden because i don't see people going out of their way to buy a pred's jersey etc..

He has a store right outside of the Garden and I think alot of us would not be happy if he was put out of business by the league competition after years of providing the fans with a merchandise outlet.

and at about 50% higher costs than anywhere else. Cosby's takes advantage of their location with their pricing.

Good point, why not make the store in Pittsburgh, or New Jersey?

I'd think the online availability in recent years of hockey jerseys and memorbabilia would be as much if not more of a concern to Cosby, if there is any concern. So if they have coped with that, then maybe they can cope with this!

I've never bought anything more than a year book and a Rangers banner from there, cos their prices are so high. And that's despite being a fan from overseas who would normally love a dedicated hockey store and be more tempted to go mad there! The prices are just so high that I've never been tempted at Cosbys.

I guess they must make their money somehow to be there so long, so I suspect they survive! Maybe a lot of the money comes from selling hockey equipment, something that I suspect an NHL store wouldn't be specialising in.
