Best blueline in the NHL

It's funny how things have turned out. Many of us thought that the Wings had the best NHL.. maybe ever.. and many nights they've looked more like the Detroit Vipers of the 'ol IHL than the Red Wings. With Hatcher injured for so long, that is such a huge hit, but they've been so dissapointing on their blueline in general, it just goes to show that 'on paper' often has as much meaning as, 'the latest Larry Brooks rumour'.

So, which team has the best blueline in the NHL and why? Please note:

When I say blueline, I do not mean team defense, goaltending, or defense in general. I mean the personel & performance of a teams' defensemen from #1 to #6/7.

I have to go with New Jersey. Everyone, including Martin and Hale are adept at playing the Devils system, and that means bad news for the opposition.

Top 4 guys only, I'll take the Isles D.

Overall, New Jersey, Vancouver, or Ottawa.

That new guy... what's his name... Barret something... he's pretty good too, injured at the moment of course.

Oh, and there's this other really really old guy that's injured right now, but when he's not, he's can shoot the puck.

Honestly... w/ MacInnis out the Blues' defense shouldn't even be mentioned.

Pronger
Jackman
Salvador
Baron
Khavanov
Finley

Khavanov has been horrible this season. Salvador just got back from an injury and isn't playing his best hockey. Baron has been up and down.. and when's down, he's horrible. Finley has been his normal steady self for a #6.. but he's still Finley.

Add Philly to that, and you've got a pretty good list.

The ISLANDERS have the one of the best (if not the best) D corps in the league.

Hamrlik, Aucoin, Niinimaa, Jonsson, Martinek, Cairns, Timander

Niinimaa used to be the heart and soul of the Edmonton Oilers. In NYI he is their 3rd/4th defenseman. Now that's depth. Mike Milbury has made some preety stupid moves, but one things for sure...he has a hell of a blueline.

Yes, but Macinnis is injured and Barret has only been back a few games. Even with them out, the Blues, led by Pronger, played very well. Hence my comments.

In terms of "best blueline" of players 1 through 6, I'm going to have to say it's the New York Islanders:

Hamrlik, Niinimaa, Aucoin, Jonsson, Martinek and Cairns...That is rock solid

Detroits Defense OWNED the first three games [going 3-0]. Then Hatcher went down, Woolley came in, Lines had to be juggled, Offense fell apart, and defense followed.

Some of you guys are giving the Isles defence way too much credit. The top 4 is good, but it doesn't outshine IMO, the top 4 of other teams such as New Jersey, Detroit, Philly or Ottawa for that matter. We could argue back and forth each individual within the top 4 of all these teams about who is better 5-5, on the PP or any other angle we could look from. But the Isles top 4 aren't any better then the teams mentioned above. Martinek and Cairns are marginal at best to round out their top 6. How much playing time did they get in the Ottawa series each game??? That just may have been Laviolette's call, but I remember when Cairns came onto the ice he was going right over to the penalty box it seemed and Martinek, well, I can't even remember him doing anything at all, that's how useless he was. I'm sorry, but when your #5 and #6 guy play 2-3 minutes in a playoff game, something's wrong!!!

As a unit, I'd say New Jersey.

Stevens
Niedermayer
Rafalski
White

Those core guys bring everything you need to a blueline. Speed, size, skill, grit, experience, winning attitude. I look at the New Jersey teams over the years and their forwards never impressed me the way their blueline does. The team is always changing, but those guys (and Brodeur) stay the same. You know you;re good when you can't find use for Oleg Tverdovsky.

One of the best. Atleast offensively. I would say Philly.

Laviolette relied too much on the Top 4 thus wearing them out and making them weak. Cairns, Martinek and Timander's confidence levels were dropped tremendously after this. This is why he's not behind the bench anymore Cairns, Butenschon, Timander and Martinek, are playing much better this season though. The Isles have so much depth in their D-corp. Aucoin is already a +15 or so in November alone!
