Thornton for Ovechkin and Crosby

What if I could deal Joe Thornton for Ovechkin and Crosby would you do it..?

I am in a keeper league...and there is one owner with a team that is so bad that he's pretty well guaranteed to be the last place team for next year and the year after...

So If I traded for his first round picks each year I could snag Ovechkin and Crosby is it worth Joe Thornton to do this..?

Thanks

I would wait until the end of the season to make this trade.

True, but he would be guaranteed Ovechkin if he does wait until the season is over. Then he could trade Thornton for Ovechikin (assuming he finishes in last place), 2005 1st. If he doesn't finish last next season you are atleast guaranteed a awsome prospect or you could trade up for the first overall pick in the 2005 Entry Draft.

If you are sure you can get those guys, it doesn't look too bad.

Like yeah I know....who trades Joe Thornton for anything but established players.....The guys a stud....

But I mean Ovechkin and Crosby don't come around everyday...This would be quite the deal....

Too much risk for you. What if he somehow manages to finish NEXT to last each of the next two years. You get neither Ovechkin nor Crosby, AND you lose Thornton.

I've never seen the same team finish dead last twice in a row and get the #1 pick. In theory it's a good move, but you have no idea what will happen with that GM or his team between now and then.

Plus, if you do somehow manage to have everything fall into place in the next two years and get both of those players, you still have to hope that they turn into great players like Thornton, and not crappy players like Daigle, who was also a consensus #1. Or that they don't have career-ending injuries, or crash their new Ferraris into brick walls....

Too much risk. Keep Thornton, he's a stud and a proven commodity.

Yeah...I mean you've got a point....

Trust me...I mean this isn't a league where it's rare to have a team do bad for extensive periods of time....

This guys team was last every year he's been in the league...which is like 2 years and his team is pretty bad now.....

Goaltending is very important in the league and his goales are Salo and Legace,,,,the guy is gonna be last....He needs to seriosuly rebuild and Thornton's not gonna make the difference...also isn't it fair to assume the risk involved in Ovechkin or Crosby is comparitvely low compared to most prospects...?

I don't know....I understand your theory...but it's fairly likely that Ovechkin and Crosby will both be stars in the league...

This isn't like ohh I hope Gilburt Brule makes it or Robbie Scremp or Evgeni Malkin...maybe one or two of those guys will somehow bust but Ovechkin and Crosby,,,? These guys have been touted for a little to long....

I think the knowledge of the Cleary types is enough in scouts minds to realize that Crosby is different..isn't he alos much bigger...?

And Ovechkin maybe alittle more risky but I am sure we can assume Top 5 NHL european like Demitra, Fedorov, Kovalchuk, Gaborik Forsberg, and Naslund....

am I really or more so I am I likley off base here?

Yes we can paint the Devil on the wall and say it won't work out...but I tend to think it seriosuly might...

If you are so for it nothing anyone says will really convivnve you. It seems you have your mind made up already.

To me trading a guy like THornton, who will be one of the top three players in the league for many more years, for two unproven commodities is not something I would ever do. First of all, you are not even guaranteed these two players (you first have to get two #1s in a row). Secondly, what is to say that eiterh of them will not become Thronton's caliber? Yes they are highly touted and yes they may both be phenoms. But life is unpredictable. Things can the wrong way for either of them.

It just seems like you are going to bet a lot by moving proven commodity for a series of question marks.

You say he needs to rebuild...are you sure he`d prefer to build around Joe Thornton and not Ovechkin and Crosby???

This trade is definately a risk for you, but if you come out of it with Ovechkin this year and than someone like Shremp next year it might not turn out too bad. Maybe you could work in another draft pick if his 2005 isn`t 1st overall.

Shremp is in the same draft class as Ovechkin. I think guys like Brule are available with crosby. Shremp, Malkin, Olesz, Barker, Wolski, Montoya, Dubnyk, are with ovechkin

Okay what If I did the Following

Thornton for the 2 First ROunders in 2004 and 2005

if I get Thornton for Ovechkin and Crosby then it's fair

If it's Thornton for Ovechkin and Brule..in this case I get a 1st rounder in 2007 for my 3rd in 2006

or Thornton for Malkin or Schremp and Crosby same as above

or Thornton for Malkin or Schremp and Brule..THen I get 1st rounder in 2007 and 2nd rounder in 2006

Sound fair..?

Then I have some guarantees in place incase I don't get Ovechkin adn Crosby....

Yeah your right...I read Shremp in a previous post and must have had that name in my head when I made my post...my mistake

That should read if you come out with Ovechkin and Brule you did alright.

I dont know if i'd do it... in the league i'm in the top four picks are lottery i think BigBill am i right? lol Secondly... though both are awsome prospects they could both bust. Thornton is a stud in yellow and black armor.!

I`d make a deal like this:

if you don`t get a top 2 pick in each of the 2004 and 2005 drafts you get the option of exchanging your first round pick in 2006 for his first round pick in 2006. So if you pick 10th overall and he picks 3rd overall you`d get his draft slot and he`d get yours.
