Will we re-sign Mike Johnson?

I sure as hell hope so! I loved his acquisition right from the start! Perfect player to play on our 3rd line! Do you guys think Gainey will re-sign him as a UFA? I'd say give him a 2 year/4 or 4.5 million dollar deal.

Also, as much as I hated Bonk last season he has been good so far this year. He's a great guy to have on the pk imo and would be a good guy to re-sign to a 1 year deal to play on the 3rd line!

Niinimaa.

Higgins and Plekanec are RFAs that will need sizeable raises.

If we can sign Bonk and Johnson for $5m, then I'll be happy, but I wouldn't sign either to more than 2 years. However, if we either sign a centre, or Plekanec doesn't end up being a decent enough 2nd line centre, then I'd just resign Johnson, and put Bonk's salary toward a centre.

Either way, our forward corps will look very similar to this season, but our defense has the potential to be completely different.

Ryder will indeed be an RFA and while he is playing great, I think we'll have to wait to see what kind of salary he'll command. Ryder already makes $2.2M and will likely see an increase, but Higgins only makes $672,980 and Plekanec $450,000, and they'll (especially Higgins) be very ready to cash in.

I don't think we'll be able to afford everybody we have, but the season is still very young and these guys might hit the skids, which will make them depreciate in value. I don't WANT that to happen, given how we're poised to have just as strong a start to the season as last year, without having to worry about the Theodore debauchery that will slide us into 10th place again.

If Johnson keeps playing like this, i'd give him at least a 3 years contract

Well Johnson seems like he is enjoying it here in MOntreal. Im sure he would like to make a home somewhere. Always being traded. I would like to see him stay.

Well, the priorities are going to be higgins and the D... It doesn't seem outlandish to think higgins can score around 70 points this year based on his performance since julien was let go... if he does score 70 points, he will ask for bergeron money if you want to sign him long term. Markov is going to be expensive... plus, there are 3 other UFA dmen to take care of and at least 2 of those spots will almost have to be filled via trade/UFA market due to our lack of depth on D

The 4 spots on D plus higgins will keep gainey's plate more than full.... I would think that johnson will probably get away from us.

I really think Bob may be able to get Johnson signed for 2 million. He is playing a diminished offensive role on the third line and will not be able to command high coin on the open market. Also I agree with the other poster he may want to settle down in a city for a few years. Anyone know if he is a family man? I am pretty sure he has a wife and two kids.

According to hockeyanalysis.com, the following players are UFA/RFA at season's end:
Rivet, Niinimaa, Souray, Bonk, Ryder, Johnson, Markov, Komi, Higgins, Perez, Downey, Pleks.

Well let's assume that Higgins gets Bergeron money, so $3m for 3 years or so.

We have $22.3m in committed cap space next season, or so I calculate. Below are players we need to replace, and their max estimated (by me) salary to re-sign:

Forwards:
Higgins - $3m
Ryder - $3.5m
Plekanec - $2m (though I suspect we'll resign him to a 1-year $1.5m deal)
Bonk - $2.5m (again.. he's already paid a lot)
Johnson - $2.5m
Perezhogin - $1.5m (that's a longshot)
Downey - $700k

Defense:
Rivet - $3m
Niinimaa - $2.5m (I don't see any team paying him more than he already makes)
Souray - $4.5m (maybe a hometown discount at $4m?)
Markov - $4m (won't get as much as Souray because of Souray's hype)
Komisarek - $2m

Goaltending:
Aebischer - $3m

Obviously we aren't goingto be able to fit all that into our cap. I suspect that we'll be able to keep Markov, Souray, Komi and one of Niinimaa or Rivet on the blueline (total max cap space $13m) and also re-sign Higgins, Ryder, Perez, Downey and Plekanec (max cap space $11.2m). Aebischer, unless he takes a discount, is gone. This leaves us with a hole on the blueline, two holes up front, and a hole at goaltender.

The blueline, one forward, and the goalie can realistically be filled with organizational depth. The second forward is a centre, and would likely have to be filled via the UFA market, though Begin on the 3rd line, and Chipchura on the 4th could possibly work.

Again, those figures are the max amount I think it would take to re-sign them, so that my proposed total salary is $46m, with 4 players left to sign is misleading. I suspect that many of those players will end up being cheaper, specifically Ryder, Higgins, Perezhogin, Markov, and Pleks.

Anyway, my two cents.

[edit to make the post relevant] I'd love to keep Johnson, but I don't think we'll be able to afford him without sacrificing our defense corps.

i think this could very well happen. We have an ideal 3rd liner in our hands, who can contribute in all facets of the game. After starting his career in a hockey city like Toronto, he was exiled to cities like Phoenix and Tampa Bay. I think being in a city where Hockey matters has given him some motivation.

I'd like him back if he plays like that all year. But I don't know if a guy like Johnson won't want to test the market. He will have only been here a year, if it's a good year, he can cash it in.

Signing our defense (Say, 2/3) and locking up Higgins and Ryder longer term will cost a lot.

Awards:
Johnson = priority. I barely even knew who he was before he came to town, now I think he's got to be one of the most underrated players in the league (and I'm not just being a homer on this one either I don't think). Total workhorse.

the way I look at it, this is what will go down...

Markov (4 years/16 million) definately, I sure as hell hope so.
Souray (3 years/12 million) definately.
Rivet (2 years/4.5 million) I would think so.
Johnson (would like a 2 year deal but I see him getting 1 year/2 million) I hope so.
Bonk (1 year/2.5 million) Good player, 2.5 is alot but I doubt he'd sign for any less.

Also, Higgins, Ryder, Komi and Pleks will definately get raises and long term contracts (I'm hoping). I'll guess Abby and Niinimaa will be gone.

As much as I love Ryder, if he asks for too much, I may consider releasing him. Locking Markov up is a must, an absolute must. Our depth at D is anemic so might as well sign Souray as well.

Higgins must absolutely stay with us, Plekanec too, since we don't have any capable number 2 centers at the moment.

I just love our third line at the moment.
