I dought Sydor becomes available, he's been a huge pickup for the Jackets and has assumed the leadership role on the team with Richardson out for six weeks.

Agreed. Darryl has inserted himself as a leader on the team very quickly, and I doubt that he'll be dealt any time soon.
And Skoula and Gonchar are both very available. I could see Skoula being dealt to a team like Minnesota, and a Gonchar to Toronto...
apparantly Gonchar is not available. apparantly Gonchar is available if the Caps become in danger of not making payroll and not before.
that means that the Caps would love to trade Jagr, might like to trade Lang, and wouldn't worry about what they got in return. Its possible that Bondra might be traded, but the idea of keeping him at a lower salary if there is hockey next year is appealing. It appears that Kolzig is very unlikely to be traded and Gonchar is not being offered. Of course Gonchar is the first one any other team would want and so the rumors or suggestions will continue. But there is so far no evidence what so ever that the Capitals have had the first conversation about trading Gonchar.
Gonchar isn't going before say, Lang. Gonchar's the only NHL worthy d-man in Washington right now, and to trade him, the Caps would have to be Pittsburgh-desperate in terms of salary.
Out of that group, probably Skoula is most available, but he won't fetch too much.
Gonchar is more available than most people think. He's set to be RFA at the end of this year, and since he's a perrenial d-man point leader, he's not going to want to play for $3-4 million. That alone makes him expendable. To grab him, two, NHL-ready d-men who can play. Because of that, it's not likely the Leafs get him unless a third party is involved.
As for Skoula, he isn't anything special, so he'd be pretty cheap. Probably a downgrade of a d-man and a lower pick or something.
Perhaps a trade involving both Jagr and Gonchar would be more attractive. It seems there is little interest for Jagr alone but these two together can really give a team another dimension... at a price ($$$) :p
Most Avs fans would probably trade Skoula for a bag dirty socks but I am not as sure Avs managment would. I am certain he can be had, but not as cheaply as you might think if you formed your opinion by what you read on these boards.
At the moment, Skoula is the Avs 5th defenseman. If they trade him, the must get a defenseman back...either that or they play McAllister...and as bad as Avs fans think Skoula is, darned few would prefer to see McAllister in the lineup.
So of RIAL's three choices, a stay-at-home #5 defenseman, a good draft pick, or a good prospect, I think only the first is a real option. And, to be real, I think the Avs can and will pick up a 5th defenseman for a draft pick closer to the deadline. I would not do a Gill for Skoula deal. Gill's decision making is no better than Skoula's and Gill is way less mobile. Gill is bigger but it doesn't matter since neither he nor Skoula use their size.
I may be alone here, but it seems to me that Skoula has been playing better the last few weeks. He hasn't been turning the puck over...at least not any more than anyone else. I am in favor of keeping him a while longer. Giving up on a young defenseman a year or two too early happens all the time in the NHL...

you know vlad....
i'm getting really sick of you making fun of the rangers
skoula's a 3rd/4th pick at best, his a 4th/5th dman at best.
Sydor isnt avaiable.
Gonchar could be got easily cause the caps are in full plummet mode and are salary ditching as well. but normally he would be worth a 2liner or a top Dman.

I think people are over-estimating how availible Gonchar is. I'm not saying he couldn't be had, but it's going to take more than a song to get him.

Word is the Caps would demand far too much for one of the best offensive defensemen in the league and would like to retain him (at a reasonable $3.65 million) for the rebuilding process next season or after the lockout ends, which ever comes first.
i know there is hope that the capitals will keep jagr, trade lang for a 5th round pick and pay half his salary, trade kolzig for a back up goalie and 4th round pick and sergei gonchar for a 2nd and a given up on prospect, but maybe its not.
The good players are assets that if sold off at 10cents on the dollar will take 5 years to replace by just being bad. the capitals are losing a bucket load of money but are far from broke. I expect the caps will trade or buy out jagr and will consider trades for the money players that will actually help the team in the near future. but the caps are not the penguins. they are in no danger of missing payroll and not simply give players that they can use next year away....if there is a next year.

Well... I keep thinking somewhere, somehow ANOTHER team will acquire Jagr because the Rangers song is getting old
Seriously, it's too bad that money is always involved. I'd like to see Jagr with the Lightning, for instance. On the wing of one of Vinny or Brad, that would be awesome.
