the money is there for him, all other D like Rivet and Souray are sondary trust me....like the experts say Markov is a poormans Niedermeyer type Dman. Which is still Top 10 in the NHL mind you, he is priorirty.

do you guys think he'll want to sign back here long term?

For some reason I think we'll have trouble signing him.

Many teams are going to want him, and his agent knows that...

Unless he really, really wants to stay, he is gone.

I'd be more inclined to wait until Feb before throwing money at him. Who knows-maybe last year was a fluke?

The thing with that is, I believe we can only talk contract with him before January. If still not signed by January we have to wait until he becomes a UFA, which is dangerous because I'm thinking about 10 teams will be after his services.

What are you talking about? Koivu signed in February or March... Huet signed before becoming UFA too.

Maybe I'm wrong then.

For some reason I thought there was a rule that stated a UFA-to-be can't discuss a contract with his current team after January.

It's *before* January. And it's not for all UFA's I think, pretty sure it's the guys on one year contracts like Gomez or Briere.

I'm 99.9% sure that Markov will sign with the habs a deal (3-4 years).

Montreal can give him the money he want. He's in Quebec since 2000, he's our number one defencemen and he know the d-squad stand on his shoulders.

Habs gonna give him 4-5 per year for a 3 years deal.

Does it have to do with those that went on arbitration?

I wouldn't say he's been stellar, with the way Markov's playing, it might even be possible to get him under 5 per

a couple things working to our advantage here.

Markov will be our top priority this summer.... Even if it means losing souray and ninnimaa, therefore, the habs offer should be very competitive.

Alot of his countrymen play for the habs and a few of them are in the system up and coming. Markov kinda strikes me as a shy guy, so I think it makes him feel comfortable to be around some of his countrymen.

His shyness might also be a drawback... I dont know if he really wants to be in such an intense hockey environment... and hopefully, he doesn't think too much about the tax issue or else we may need to overpay him even more

When its all said and done, I fully expect markov to be a hab. (unless a blockbuster trade for a #1 d-man is executed)
