50 Greatest Moments at Madison Square Garden

Ever since the "re-launch" of Madison Square Garden on opening night (October 5th) against the Washington Capitals,
MSG Network has been promoting a documentary series on the 50 greatest moments at Madison Square Garden.
The "World's Most Famous Arena" has not seen much excitement in recent years regarding its primary tenants
(unless you count the New York Liberty reaching the 2002 WNBA Finals), but somehow this program may draw interest.

Will the New York Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup championship victory on June 14, 1994 top the list? We shall see.
What Rangers moments do you predict will be in the top 50 and where? Let's hear your opinions!

Here is the official web site (yes, there is one) on this documentary series on MSG Network.
It made its debut earlier tonight with Wayne Gretzky's 1997 playoff hat trick against the Florida Panthers
ranking #48 on the list.

94 Cup victory has to be at least top 3.
Stephane Matteau's goal will definately be in the top 50.
Richter winning the 1994 All-Star Game MVP might squeek in or they just might give a nod to it as part of that incredible season.
Gretzky's last game comes to mind. Especially now that Jagr, the man who won it in overtime for the Pens is wearing the C in NY.
Messier returning?

Edit:

I just looked at the official site. I really don't see how A Christmas Carol beats the 1994 Game 7. Call me crazy, but I don't see it. Mark Messier lifting the greatest trophy in all of sports beats Tim Curry as Scrooge. Didn't A Christmas Carol play at the Theatre and not in the arena?

Mess' last game.

Gretz's hattrick against the Panthers in the P.O.

Mess' retirement ceremony.

Although it probably won't make it Ted Irvine's goal in triple overtime against the Hawks in the semis

opening game of 2006, jagr scoring on first shot of the season? Is that not that important? I think they deffinitly need to put in the shootout victory last season with malik's goal. Longest shootout in nhl history ( i know its only bee 1.1 season) and the way he scored, i think that has to be top 50.

Good memories for the fans. But for the entire Garden history? Not sure. Not 100% how many hockey moments there going to be anway (with the Knicks, concerts, college BB and such).

They held a private event last week at the IFC center, showed some of the highlights I guess. I was there but didn't stick around too long.

It seemed like there was gonna be alot of basketball, boxing and tennis, Mcenroe was there as well as famed Boxing guy Bert Sugar.

I can probably think of...

50 better moments than Jagr's first goal this year or Malik's OT goal. I was there for Gartner's 600th, Mess' 500th (and 400th and 600th I believe), Mess first game at MSG as a Canuck and TGO's last NHL game, as well as others I was not at, including Stepkowski's goal, Giacomin's first game back, among others.

Fletch: are you referring to the Polish Prince Peter Stemkowski? He did not score the goal in triple overtime, it was Ted Irvine.Further, if you are referring to that game, do you remember Stan Mikita hitting both posts after Giacomin was dazed by a rocket off the stick of Bobby Hull? BTW are you getting any sleep or will you and the baby watch the game tonight?

I was four years old...

when that happened (I think I was at least) - so I missed everything (was that around '73?). I'm getting as much sleep as I was getting prior to the baby (I usually slept 4-5 hours a night anyways - my wife is getting crushed).

I just started law school, so it had to be '70 or '71. I n 1972 we played the Bruins in the finals. I went to the first game in Boston Gardens. The big bad Bruins pummeled the Rangers for the first thirty minutes and led 4-0. The Rangers rally, tie the score with three minutes left. The rink is tilted toward the Bruin's end. With thirty seconds left Walt Tkachuk has a wide open net and hits the post. Wayne Cahman scores three minutes into overtime. What a long trip home. Then, perhaps, my worst moment in Ranger history, watching Espo skate the Cup after game 6. Think that moment will be in the top 50?

You would mean Peter Stemkowski. I know this because I was coincidentally throwing up out the window of my dorm (7th floor) after significant consumption of adult beverages at the time and I told my roommate I wasn't going to the bathroom because the game was going into triple overtime.

Am I reading that right or did 1979, The 94 all-star game and Matteau all rank AHEAD of the 94 cup?

I was at the game. Stemmer took the original shot that was stopped by Tony Esposito. Irvine put home the rebound!

I was also at the game:

Stemkowski got the Triple Overtime Goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not Irvine.

Unless they changed the scoring in the last week or so.

Besides events of '94, and Stemmer's goal, my favorite moment was when Giacomin skated out to center ice and spoke with Derek Sanderson before they dropped the puck for a Game 3 against the Bruins in the finals. The next 5 minutes were amazing to watch.

Sorrry my fellow poster, it was Teddy's goal. The game ran so long that the concessions ran out of beer. Clearly had my fill but Irvine not Stemmer. I'll check and post on this thread. You do the same!

They often have MSG Vault on and sometimes you can get "moments of MSG"

just watch the MSG channel for a week straight, chances are they will air it at least once that week the 50 greatest moments. I actually have parts of it on my DVR.

I know they play it a ton on MSG, but I'm in school in California for 3 more years so watching MSG isn't really an option.
