GM meetings today

All the GM's in one spot, let's hope Lombardi either does something, or gets talks started about a few players.

TSN has a story going that the Flyers have recalled Nedved in hopes that another team claims him. I wonder if the Flyers group is walking around with

For Sale
50% OFF

signs?

i just hope that if the kings do make a trade it wont be for a defenseman. seems like most of the trades lately have been for d-men.

You build from the back out. But the top priority should definitely be some additional scoring. Look at all the top teams in the league or the past Cup winners and you'll notice a pattern; two top line centers, three-four lines deep.

When you look at the Hurricanes defense last season or even the Sabres this season, there isn't a stand-out top flight defenseman on their roster.

I would hope that if the Kings are going to pattern themselves after a team, it should be the Sabres. Just look at their four offensive lines...

Hecht-Briere-Pominville
Vanek-Roy-Afinogenov
Novotny-Drury-Kotalik
Peters-Gaustad-Mair

They also have Connolly but he's out until the new year. They acquired Hecht, Briere and Drury via trade and have drafted their other top line forwards.

Their top six only consists of one North American player; Brian Campbell. The other five; Henrik Tallinder, Teppo Numminen, Dmitri Kalinin, Jarsoslav Spacek and Toni Lydman.

All mobile skating defensemen who can move the puck. None of them stand out as being a physical force, the Sabres are the best skating squad in the entire league.

Their D-corps is their biggest weakness...Spacek is in their top pairing.

Next season, when Briere will, presumably, have been dealt or gone elsewhere, they'll likely used the extra funds to upgrade in that department.

Buffalo has a great defense 1-6.

Tallinder is one of the most underrated players in the entire league.

Tallinder
Lydman
Spacek
Campbell
Numminen
Kalinin

no weaknesses there whatsoever.

I didn't say it was weak, necessarily...just their weakest area. They've got decent bang for their buck, but, in reality, it's not an above-average NHL crew. They're serviceable enough because Buffalo is a very tenacious, hard-working and talented offensive crew...

Note also that none of the forwards and only 1 defenseman (Spacek) were free agent acquisitions. That is the key lesson to be learned here...draft well, draft well, and draft well some more, then make key trades to fill in the holes. Free agency is tremendously overrated in the NHL.

They may hope that, but the call-up appears to be more of real need because Jeff Carter has a broken ankle.

Let me suggest a corollary - don't trade for ANYONE over 30 unless they are literally THE final piece of the puzzle.
