Maybe to inquire as to what sort of things Derien would agree to...

Being traded, being waived and demoted to the Phantoms, retiring.

They met to just get a feel as to where he could play and put it out there that he can't be a part of this team anymore...?

According to the Daily News it was a conversation with Hurricanes President/GM Jim Rutheford, Holmgren and Hatcher's agent Pat Morris.

My guess is it went like this:

Holmgren - "Hey Jim - what can we get for Hatcher?"

Rutheford - " are you serious???? "

maybe the canes are unhappy with their plethora of speed on backend and want to slow it down.

I'm thinking the 'Canes should go with Brindy for Hatcher straight up. Oh heck, I'm in a generous mood, we'll throw in Rathje and Esche as well.

Sad thing is I still don't think that would solve our problem.

The real sad thing is that is about what we gave up for those two.

You beat me to it.

Maybe he's the new GM. First step: sign Esche to a 15-year deal.

This excites me. I really hope that it is indeed the Flyers talking to Hatcher about moving in some fashion. I'd like to see Hatcher traded somewhere suitable for him, rather than sent to the minors.

The only place I can see Hatcher being "suitable" is Buffalo if they run into an injury problem.

It seems logical that the fastest team in the league would be able to mask his slowness.

But good luck trying to move him there!
