Any word on whether Shafigulin intends on coming over? He sounds intriguing...

Teemu Laakso, Mike Santorelli, and Dov Gromet-Morris(FA, ex Harvard goaltender, excellent in college, don't know how he's done in the minors) all signed, per the Tennessean.

Santorelli and Gromet-Morris will be in Milwaukee, Laakso in Finland

Five Predators Prospects Participating In USA WJC Evaluation Camp

Predators prospects Jeremy Smith (G - Plymouth (OHL)), Jon Blum (D - Vancouver (WHL)), Ryan Flynn (F - University of Minnesota (WCHA)), Blake Geoffrion (F - University of Wisconsin (WCHA)), and Ben Ryan (F - Notre Dame (CCHA)) are currently participating in the USA Hockey World Junior Championships Team Evaluation Camp. This is a good sign in that our five prospects participating ties only Colorado, however not all of the players are expected to make the actual team.

Unfortunately, coverage of this event (where the camp roster is split into a Blue and White team and they are playing a series of scrimmages against the Swedish and Finnish National Jr Teams) is very limited and only tidbits of information are available.

Here are a couple of snipets from the coverage on NHL.com

Quote:
--Blake Geoffrion has been a force in each of the three games I have seen him play. He is among the first in on the forecheck, has played the body well and given up his body to block shots and break up offensive charges. But, he has not provided much offensively. Will the other contributions be enough to get him on the team come December? It remains to be seen, but I like his chances.
Quote:
--Goaltending could be the American bugaboo in this tournament. None of the five goalies on hand has shown the ability to steal games here, although Jeremy Smith was strong on Wednesday night. The Americans will have to find a go-to goalie before December arrives if they hope to have as strong a showing as they did last year.
Quote:
--With players like Hayes, van Riemsdyk, Eric Tangradi, David Fischer and Ryan Flynn, the Americans will not be lacking for size.
Quote:
[During Wednesday's 5-3 victory over Sweden] [Jeremy] Smith made a sweet glove save on a Patrik Lundh slapper early in the third to keep the score at 5-2. He was solid throughout the game for Team Blue.
Quote:
[Also during the 5-3 victory over Sweden] Blake Geoffrion, meanwhile, used his chest – dangerously close to his neck and face – to block a close-range slap shot after the score was 5-3. Geoffrion has not been on the score sheet to often, but he has been a standout when it comes to providing gritty, physical play.
http://fans.nhl.com/Groups/2007_USA_...aluation_Camp/

Jeremy Smith has also impressed Elliot Olshansky of CSTV who writes:

Quote:
- Speaking of major junior players, I really like what I've seen from Jeremy Smith. He's made some very tough saves in his time in net, and looks as solid as any of the U.S. goalies I've seen. If I were picking the goalies for the World Juniors team, I'd go with Smith and Joe Palmer.
http://slog.cstv.com/rinkrat/2007/08..._and.html#more

You can read more of Olshansky's write-ups HERE

I'm going to predict right now that Jeremy Smith is in net for the US, Blum is on defense and manning one of the points on the PP, and Geoffrion (despite his continued lack of offensive production) will be on the team as a fourth line forward and a major contributor on special teams. I believe Flynn is on the outside looking in at this point, but might be brought in as a role player based upon his effort in the rest of this camp and how he starts his collegiate season...Geoffrion is probably going to be closely monitored as he starts his season too.

Here's a picture from USA Hockey of Blake Geoffrion nailing a Finnish player with a big hit along the boards.

Blake is a pking beast. It would be a gigantic mistake to leave him off the team, as he can make the third/fourth line a dangerous, well-oiled machine. I just like his style of play.....His offense hasn't been progressing as well as we hoped (see last year's NCAA stats), but he still brings a solid game to the table.

I agree, but part of me worries that we used a second round pick on Vernon Fiddler.

A 2nd round pick on Fiddler?

The thing about Fiddler is........I think if we could get a hold of those compromising pictures that Fiddler has of Trotz and Poile, and make them public.....then the cat would be out of the bag, Fiddler will have lost his leverage, and they would feel more free to move him out of Nashville, without the same ramifications.

Fiddler is an ok player....until the puck hits his stick then he's an instant turnover.

Didn't realize it until this evening, but two other Predators prospects are also participating in the USA Hockey World Junior Championships Evaluation Camp. Forwards Viktor Sjodin (Sweden) and Niko Snellman (Finland) are also representing their countries during this camp.

Personally, I liked what I saw from Snellman in limited time during last year's training camp and look forward to keeping an eye on him come September 13th or 14th.

From reports, it certainly seems like Blum and Geoffrion had an excellent camp.

The goalie position still seems up in the air with Smith battling for the top spot. Goaltending might certainly be viewed as a weakness, or at least a wild card at this point for the U-20 team.

Agreed, I think that Smith will leave the camp with the starting spot to lose and it will really come down to how the players fair with their junior/college teams once the season starts. Smith has Neuwirth to battle with in Plymouth for the starting role so that might hurt him, but wouldn't it be great to have the starting US goalie be a Nashville prospect?

Hockey’s Future loved the play of Jonathon Blum (NAS) at the camp. He showed a lot of mobility and confidence in his play. He was rarely taken out of position. To his credit, he also showed that he can play under pressure, having played in the last two CHL Memorial Cup tournaments, winning it all last spring with the Vancouver Giants.

Canes blog

Thought this piece of info. fit in this thread. According to the Canes beat reporter the Preds and Canes are considering turning their two pre-season games into double dips with rookies and first year pros skating before the big boys.

I think that would be really cool and I know I for one would be there to see it as we don't get to see a lot of our prospects in any real training camp action outside of drills and a few intersquad scrimmages the first few days before they are sent back.

The one misleading part of the article although is that the Predators did indeed hold their annual rookie/prospects camp about a week following the draft. I would love to see our prospects up at the Traverse City rookie tournament, but could live with a pair of exhibition games against the Canes this season.

Well, it looks like Nashville should have kept Robert Dietrich on the roster for a few days longer...

First game in the DEL -> broken ankle, will miss two or three months
