Jeremy Smith practices with the Preds...

Quote:
Practice for prospect: With Ellis taking the day off, the Predators had prospect Jeremy Smith practice with the team.

Smith, the team's second-round draft pick last summer, is a Dearborn, Mich., native. His Plymouth, Mich., junior team was eliminated from the playoffs a couple of weeks ago.

"It was great to be out there with the guys,'' Smith said. "Practicing in (Joe Louis Arena) was weird because it's somewhere you came and watched NHL hockey growing up. You're kind of shocked at first, but after that, the guys make you feel at home.''

How good is Rinne supposed to be? I saw him play in the AHL All Star game and he looked very impressive. Does he project as a stud goalie, or is he not that level of prospect? Do the Preds see him as their goalie of the future?

In my opinion, since the first time I saw him back at the 2003 Prospect Camp he appeared to me to be the next great Finnish goalie. He has done nothing to ever make me doubt that. He has nothing left to prove in the AHL and will be in Nashville next season. He is our goalie of the future right now and will be given a shot to earn his time in Nashville next season.

Great size and athleticism, Rinne knows how to use his size to take away net from the shooter. Quick reflexes, his one weakness is rebounds, but that is common with 6'5" goalies that play the butterfly. Honestly though, I haven't seen him in a game recently so I really don't know how his rebound control in games is...I've only noticed it honestly in practices while he was with Nashville to finish the season.

What do you guys know of John Vigilante? I live in the same city he does in Michigan used to play street hockey with him a couple times also played against him in a beer league game last summer or the summer before. I never really talked to him though. Wondering will he ever play in the NHL or just the minors like his brother Mike?

From that article:

Quote:
Spaling finished with 14 goals and 30 points in 20 playoff games, third in the league in playoff goals and fifth in points. His eight power-play goals were tied for the OHL playoff lead this season.

During the regular season he posted 38 goals and 72 points in 56 games, tied for 16th in the league in goals. His 25 power-play scores were second most during the regular season, while his six game-winning goals were tied for 14th. Spaling also added a goal in the OHL All-Star Game.

Spaling looks like a 2/3rd line type guy. I'm so happy that at least initially, it looks like one of our early 2nd round forward types is proceeding as expected. If we could get Spalin and Geoffrion together on the third line in a few years, I would be happy.....Defense with offense sprinkled in !

The Spaling, Azevedo & Halischuk line have been DOMINANT tonight in the semi-final game ... through 2 periods that line has 5 goals and 15 points ... let's see if they can reproduce that performance Sunday afternoon

I figured it would be appropriate to ask this here, since it does pertain to a prospect...

Has Niskala decided what he's doing yet? Is he gonna head back to Europe or will he go the Koistinen route (sign an one-way deal and go to Europe if he can't make the team out of camp)?

Atlant Moscow is shoping for him. Looks like if he is not making the Preds, he is off to KHL.

I heard about that as well and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he went ahead and signed a deal now. There's no way we're carrying 8 defensemen again.

I think with the way that Poile is deciding to go (Anaheim-esque) he's going to get lost in the shuffle

He has NHL hands and probably NHL mobility, but he's too small and with Legwand and Arnott under contract long-term, there's no opening for him any time soon unless we decide to roll three scoring lines, which won't happen. Even if we did, we could see Spaling up before O'Reilly because he has a more complete package (read: he can play defense well).

Not a bad player, but he has no place in Nashville immediately or long-term. Would make fantastic trade bait.

Camp starts Tuesday with physicals/off-ice testing at Centennial. Wednesday the team is doing team building and more off-ice and Thursday morning at 10 AM is the first on-ice session open to the public. Rest of the schedule TBA.
