As I write this, I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that Liles is traded at some point, possibly this season, for either a power-forward type or a more stay-at-home, bigger defenseman. If Liles is traded, Giguere darn well better make sure he gets a quality player in return. No more Chris Drury-style trades are needed around here, where the Avs goof on the player they get back, a la Derek Morris.
I think that the Thrashers lack a good puck moving Dman. McCarthy isn't the answer as it seems. The organization has plenty of stay-at-home Dman already.
Would you mind getting JM Liles?
What are you prepared to give up?
Let us think about this Simple Man. You make a number of good points all of which are valid but do you agree that Liles is a better player than Exelby? If Colorado is willing to take Exelby and a third round pick in exchange for Liles then DW would have to make that move as it improves the Thrashers.
If Coloardo asked for Exelby and a second round pick then the cost is too high in my mind. Exelby is an asset but he is a stay at home defenseman which is much easier to replace than a player with a more complete skill set. Liles at 1.3 is affordable and signed for next season.
Of course with Exelby out for two to six weeks this is not going to happen.
Yeah, I would jump on it... but why would the Avs do this deal? I could see if this was a contract year for Liles, but its not. 2 more years left on a very reasonable contract. It certainly won't make them a better club. It makes no sense and will never happen.
