The Panthers (6-9-4) opened a three-game homestand with a 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday. Florida had a season-high 45 shots, but couldn't solve goaltender Olaf Kolzig.

"We had 45 shots and a lot of chances but the puck just didn't go in tonight," said Olli Jokinen, who leads the team with 10 assists and 16 points. "It's frustrating."

Jokinen is trying to avoid his second five-game stretch without scoring a goal this season.

Panthers goaltender Ed Belfour, second all-time with 460 career wins, was victorious in his last four starts and recorded a 2.93 goals-against average against the Canadiens last season while with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Cristobal Huet, who made 29 saves for Montreal Wednesday to improve to 5-2-2 with a 2.32 GAA this season, recorded a shutout in his only career start against the Panthers, a 1-0 road win on March 2.

Montreal won three of four meetings between the teams in 2005-06, but the Panthers are 3-1 in the last four games in Florida.

Nieuwendyk returns tonight however Stephen Weiss will not, Martin is being cautious about returning him to play, even though Weiss feels he is ready. Expect Kiwi at forward again. Weiss likely returns on Saturday.

Red Hot Cat Of The Night: Nathan Horton has stepped up his play recently, recording 7 points in his last 7 games, including 3 powerplay goals.

You should have titled the thread "Sacre bleu!" or "Mon Dieu!" Les Habitants vs. Panthers.

My prediction for this game: I don't want to look

Wow, if that's the result of losing, I guess it's not all bad. Some nice deals there, lower bowl if you can get it is the only way to see the game, if I have to sit upper bowl I usually just prefer to watch at home. I think I paid around $75 a ticket for opening night lower bowl, of course considering it was an 8-3 win I think it was well worth it

Oh btw, in case anyone gets confused tonight, and if any Habs fans are watching on Center Ice with the Florida feed, Steve Goldstein is taking over for Dave Strader tonight, just in case you wonder why our play by play may suddenly become more of a homer.

Habs played last night, and muchas gracias for defeating the Lightning, so we might catch them a little tired. Here's hoping Belfour knows a thing or two about the Canadiens and we finally get off the schnide. And Newy, stay healthy all the way through please!

weiss is out per the herald article. nice piece on gelinas today in the pbp.

good quote that sums things up nicely:

Quote:
"Chemistry is the big thing," he said. "In Calgary, it was up and down all year, but the last 40 games we just played hard for each other; it was a simple system but everybody followed it and we got the results.

"We just need to be a little tighter, make sure as a group that we're making it happen. We want to do so much as individuals that we get out of the system. We've got to get back to basics - and get healthy - and things will work out."
let's hope they start tonight.

We always play games against the Habs really close and are usually the outcome is by a only one goal and whichever team took more advantage of their scoring chances typically wins. From reading this GDT, I'm shocked to know their special teams and road record are that damn good. On the bright side, they did play last night and thankfully beat the Lightning, but I'm sure the Bolts didn't tire them out at all. The Panthers have to come out incredibly strong and play a physical and speedy game if they want to keep up for 60 minutes.

Good game tonight.

We never really know as we change our lines often....my best guess based on the last couple games:

Olli-Stumpel-Roberts
Newy-Horton-Peltonen
Weiss-Kolnik-Olesz
Campbell-Gratton-Kiwi

JBow-Mez
Allen-MVR
Salei-Monty

Belfour

haha...nobody I know say sacre bleu, it's becoming an urban legend

By the way the GDT doesn't consider yesterday's game.

Souray is now at 7 PPG and tied with Higgins at 8.
Koivu is now leading the team with 16 PTS.

<Rant on>

Unless you are a season ticket holder. I don't know who is running things from a business standpoint over there, but flooding the market with discount tickets when your most loyal fans pony up full price is a time bomb. You sell tickets today, but @@$$ed off STHers cancel tomorrow. It would be different if something were done to make it up to the STHer, but of course nothing is done (unless you count e-mails for "exclusive" (cough cough) ticket offers ). Yes, I know the GDT is the wrong place for this rant, but there always seems to be a "I got four tickets in exchange for a piece of string and some used bubble gum" post in here...

disclaimer: This rant is not against people who buy discount tickets. It's against the bozos in Sunrise who treat season ticket holders like crap.

<Rant off>

I completely agree with you! We can't afford season tickets-not to mention the travel expenses. But I can completely see how STHs would feel ripped off by the organization. My post wasn't to rub it in anyone's face-it was just one of those "I can't believe how desperate the organization is to sell tickets." I get these emails all the time. If you'd like, I can forward the email to you and you can call the front office and lodge a complaint. Let me know.

The Panthers usually don't fare horribly against the Canadiens. Nevertheless, I don't want to make any predictions just yet. The Habs tend to be a speedy and certainly above-average stickhandling team, so we know what to expect from their end. The Panthers, conversely, have yet to find a consistent style of play. The result will be a reflection of Florida's ability to skate with Montreal.

The Habs have been taking a lot of penaltys recently and playing a 2nd game in 2night you can expect a few more hooking calls. Panthers PP is ranked 2nd so we will have to look out.

The Habs have been taking a lot of penalties? Balderdash, we wrote the book on taking penalties Panthers the most penalized team in the league I believe. I don't doubt the game being won with special teams. I'd say the only advantages are being at home and being rested compared to the Habs. Other than that, everything is an uphill battle, but after seeing what the Flyers and Senators did last night, hey I'm ready to believe anything.

No offense was taken. Don't worry about forwarding me the e-mail. I already get them. Yes, they ARE that clueless.

My beef is with management, not the fans (the Panthers fans anyways). I just don't understand why Jacques Habsfan gets to come to the game for $50 with free beer, food & parking, while Angry_Treefrog gets to pony up full price for tix, food and $10- Heinekens. (Yes, they want $10- for a ******* Heineken)

Last night they talked about the penalty ratio and the Panthers are FAR ahead with a ratio of PP/PK of -41. The 2nd team was around -20. The french broadcasting guys said it's because they send rookies refs in Florida.

Yes I believe we've only had 1, maybe 2 games where we had more PPs than the other team. Sometimes we take dumb penalties but (and I'm sure like many teams) we've been handed some outright game changing calls that were wrongful, such as the San Jose game.

But that's been talked about so much over here, I just hope the team can overcome it, be nice to show the refs that they can't decide the game. One thing's for sure, though our PK isn't rated very high right now, we get a lot of chances to bring it up.

I guess that just makes our 2nd ranked PP that much more impressive, considering the few chances we get. We almost always manage to get one, even if it's our only goal of the game. But yes the disparity is not a pretty one.

Thus why he always plays center. I've not seen him play wing in a long long time.
