My sister works in a hospital instrument processing unit (they prep instrument packs for surgeries) and she told me they are constantly coming out with improved surgical techniques that are less invasive & replacement joints that wear better & longer.
I guess it is like a lot of medical procedures- the more they do, the better they get at doing them.

So true. My Mom had a hip replacement at 79. She's 85 now and still the best dancer at the parties.
