OT: Ottawa Pick 'n' Win contest

I just wanted everyone who is participating in this contest to know that there was a way to exploit the system so that you could make your picks after the game was complete, thus giving you a perfect score. I sent an email to the contest organizers telling them of how the exploit is done and that I suspected the leader (A.Dixit) was cheating for the month of November.

I sent the email earlier in the afternoon and received this response shortly after 5pm:
Quote:
Hello Chris,

We have investigated the flaw on our system and we have fixed it. We implemented more security layers.

You will see different results on the leaderboard soon. Also, for the past participants that made their picks after the game.

We really appreciate it and Thank you for your feedback.

The Pick’n’Win Team
If you look at the leaderboard you will notice quite a few people have disappeared or lost points. This is because they did a system check and reset any picks that were the result of the exploit to a score of 0. I unfortunately lost the points from the Minnesota game (I would have had 20 ) since that was when I did my test of the exploit and I foolishly used the same account as my normal one.

Just posting this to make sure people know what was going on and why they may have jumped up in the standings all of a sudden (or why others like A.Dixit disappeared).

I too spotted it and sent them an e-mail after noticing that Dixit was basically getting everything right on every single game. I tried it for yesterday's game and it worked. I didn't get an e-mail back from the Sens though. Glad they fixed it, though it did cost me the 15 points I would have gotten yesterday.

Thanks guys.

I'm now in first place in the HFSensFans group, 62nd overall. Woo hoo!

I was pretty frustrated last game. I got lucky and got everything right except the goal differential. I picked 3+ (damn SHG with 16 seconds left, mutter, mutter, mutter). And then I check today and find out I've lost ground to the leader. That was a bummer.

That was actually me in the lead . It's too bad I didn't use a different account for the test, as I was sitting in ~20th overall and with the points I would have picked up (20) I'd be tied for 17th overall. Instead I drop down to 92nd Still, I'd much rather have a fair contest than have people trying to be sneaky and pretending they aren't cheating.

I was actually pretty suspicious at the beginning of November when Dixit put together like 3 consec perfect predictions. I just didn't have the chance to test my theory on how he was doing it until a few days ago.

Oh, and for those who are curious Dixit is now T-1222 with a grand total of 10 points for November. I guess he/she forgot to cheat on one game

I was doing well for awhile but I think I've since missed a few games.

no, just jump in next month. Top people of the month get a prize, top of half the season get a prize.

Yeah, even if you aren't realistically going for the total for the first half, you can still go for the monthly/second half totals (at least I think the second half has everyone start from scratch again).

On a related note, I just noticed they've given me the picks I made prior to the Minnesota game giving me the 20 points I thought I had lost So now I'm back to being tied for 18th overall and back in the lead for the HF group

Good for you. You deserve it. If I was running the contest I woulda given you a bonus prize for the scam detection.

I won both prizes for January. Woo hoo!!!

Gonna take the wife and some friends to a game on Valentine's Day.

Do you think the tickets are enough, or should I get her a chocolate bar too?

EDIT: Remind me to tell you my excellent system at the end of the year. You'll laugh.

No. Nothing illegal. I'm talking about my method for choosing the picks.

Awesome job. I hadn't been following things as closely as I'd like to have since December (I've forgotten to make picks several times now ). Keep it up! Maybe you can grab the second half prize as well!

I'd have to get really lucky to win the second half prize, but 2 club seats to a playoff game would be really nice.
