Not sure where many are getting the idea that waiving a player is a magical elixir for cap woes.

If waived a player's salary still counts against the cap, unless claimed by a team off of waivers (in the case of Rathje or Hatcher), or the player(s) retire.

Seems like you are taking a big risk of hoping the player retires and he doesn't, because it is unlikely he will fit into a team concept again (attitude wise).

Perhaps most importantly it sends a terrible message to other potential UFA targets. Other potential UFAs are going to frown on how such other recent UFA acquisitions (Rathje and Hatcher) were treated (if waived).

No. You are wrong. They can not be taken off the cap if they are in the last year of a contract they signed after age 35. We are still on the hook for Rathje and Hatchers salary, but they wouldnt count against the cap if waived.

Perhaps, but no one wants to sign with a losing team either.

Not sure where you got this idea. There's no "hoping" about it.

You can send a player to the minors, before which he has to clear waivers. If they clear and are sent down, their salary comes off the cap. We did this with Nedved, Dimitrakos and Baumgartner. We can do it with Hatcher and Rathje too.

And the only message it sends is that you better play your *** off here or you'll be held accountable.
