What's so wrong about this idea ? Drop both picks and I'd do it in a heartbeat. Lower the 1st to a 3rd and I'd do it in a heartbeat. Lower the 1st to a 2nd and I'd take a long look at it ... Only if Alfredsson's salary is disclosed for the next two years (not listed at http://www3.telus.net/public/dreyes/nhl/ott.html). If it's still 4.6 untill 08/09 then it's pretty much the same contract situation with Kovalev (4.5 untill 08/09).
No, from the Habs point of view. Kovalev is average right now, but seems to kick in during the Playoffs...if he gets there. At 4.5 mill, Montreal will keep him. He should be able to get 30 goals this year if he picks it up slightly. Not sure how Alfie is doing. I don't think he is doing as good as Ottawa would like.
From the Habs perspective I believe it's a viable trade, but I think it's ridiculous b/c there is no way that these teams would trade within their division, especially when discussing such high ipact players. Furthermore, I cannot imagine Ottawa making this deal and giving up their Captain and leadership for a player like Kovy who doesn't show up all the time.
As a Hab fan i would strongly consider the deal, but i would have to look more into Alfie's cap hit and remainder of his deal.
Regardless of Kovalev's playoff performance, Alfredsson brings more to the table every game. I would consider the trade.
lets see , danny boy has been the so called leader of a team that is loaded with talent and has been ready to " win " for a few years now and have not even gotten a sniff of the cup and the fact that he dissappears in the playoffs has a lot to do with this and i see no reason why this would change if he were playing for the habs . the fact that kovalev steps it up a notch in the playoffs is reason enough to give a thumbs down to this deal imo .
Last year in the playoffs he was a point per game guy Alfredsson that is. This deal would never happen but if the Senators were in the West and were still struggling I am sure both GM's would ponder the idea.

Other forwards were a point per game guys too, but all of those guys sucked against Buffalo, except Spezza. Many of our own players would also have gotten over a point per game against a team as crappy as Tampa was.
That being said, I'd still take Alfredsson over Kovalev.
