The debate continues.........

McKenzie: The debate on head shots

Much to the chagrin of the Detroit Red Wings, the NHL has decided not to pursue supplementary discipline against Canuck defenceman Willie Mitchell for his high, hard hit on Johan Franzen Wednesday night. So the net result stands as a two-minute minor for interference.

But the Mitchell hit on Franzen could yet be something of a turning point in the head shot debate that has been ongoing in the wake of devastating hits on Trevor Letowski, Aaron Downey, Jason Williams and now Franzen.

While most general managers have been adamant that hitting is part of the game and the occasional shoulder to the head is the cost of doing business in an often violent sport, quite a number of them didn't like the Mitchell hit on Franzen.

They thought it was a late hit and now, instead of picking up the flag on the cause of headshots, their rallying cry seems to be, let's crack down on late hits.

The funny thing is that Colby Armstrong's hit on Letowski appeared to be every bit as late as Mitchell's on Franzen, but there was no penalty assessed to Armstrong, so everyone seemed to think that one was okay.

Whatever they choose to call it now - head shots, late hits, take your pick - it may be that the tolerance for them is slowly, very slowly, going south.

Unfortunately, we are likely to find out, because based on precedent so far this season, we're likely to see another one of these types of hits within the next two weeks or so...

eff Detroit after watching Cleary run Johnsson from behind last year giving him a concussion that ended his season and his Flyers career.

It doesn't matter what the powers that be call for officials to start taking notice of. They'll **** it up. Just give them time.

It's true. We're already seeing it in the OHL. A player gets hit in the shoulder and just throws his head back upon impact and draws a call for a check to the head. Making a check to the head illegal has only increased embellishment and given more ways for the officials to get fooled by the actors and ******* in the league.

Exactly -- and when it is a legitimate check to the head, half the time it's not called.
