Has there ever been a bigger brawl?

The Thrashers-Caps game got me wondering has there ever been a bigger scrum than the Stars-Ducks '98 in the NHL? That one was just awesome, the Ducks had like 3-4 players on the bench at the end of the game.

Depends what you mean by "bigger" but the Ottawa-Philly game in March 2004 featured an NHL game record of 419 minutes in penalties. In the third period alone, the Flyers received 209 minutes and Ottawa 200 -- both marks are 1-2 for PM in a period in NHL history.

In the game, Ottawa received 8 minors, 10 majors, 4 10-minute misconducts and 10 game misconducts. Philadelphia received 9 minors, 11 majors, 4 10-minute misconducts and 10 game misconducts. Twenty game misconducts.

Some other feats:
North Stars-Bruins February 1981 -- Minnesota received 15 minors, 8 majors, 4 10-minute misconducts and 7 game misconducts for a total of 34 penalties -- the NHL record for most in one period. Boston had 16, 8, 3 and 6 (of the types of penalties listed above) for a total of 33. In the game, Minnesota received 42 penalties (18, 13, 4 and 7) as did Boston (20, 13, 3 and 6). Thirteen game misconducts.

Edmonton holds the mark for most penalties in one game with 44 (follow the types above -- 26, 7, 6, 4, and 1 match penalty) at LA in February 1990. LA had 41 in that game (26, 9, 3 and 3). The combined 85 is an NHL record. Those numbers are inflated, however, because of the total of minors.

To me, the greatest brawl ever was Canada vs. the USSR in the 1987 WJC. The infamous "Punchup in Piestany." The greatest rivalry in international hockey history gave us many great moments and memorable games. Before this game, the WJC was not a major event in the Canadian sports landscape. But by the end of the day, everyone knew about the brawl, and they knew of the WJC.

Even if the Soviets did instigate it to cost the Canadians gold (a commonly held theory in international hockey), you can't deny the ramifications. The WJC was on the Canadian sporting map.

You wouldn't see 11,000 fans in Vancouver for Switzerland-Norway if it wasn't for that brawl. The WJC final is the top rated event on TSN each year. Canada's the only hockey nation in the world where the WJC draws more interest than the World Championships. Canada goes nuts for this event year. The Punch-up is a very big reason for that.

Two Brawls involving the Kings:

Kings vs. Flyers, March 11, 1979 - 372 penalty minutes in the first period.
Kings vs. Senators, December 20, 2001 - 236 penalty minutes in the 2nd period.

Not sure exactly where these rank, but they have to be in the top 10, probably top 5.

I think the Oilers biggest brawl would have been against the Kings as well. I can't remember the details but I vaguely remember Glenn Anderson being a big part of it.

Also came across this footage of a Van-Montreal battle:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=k-JGoWKP5...elated&search=

It ends (4:35 mark), um, emphatically, prior to a clip of an Isles-Flyers clip.

I thought the same. Only 4 players were left on CGY's team.

That series in 81 or 82 where Dale Hunter scored the OT winner was exciting, brutal hockey. Some good brawls in that one, shizzle that.

YouTube.com has the Montreal-Quebec brawl. Type in Nordiques and it is the second listing. There is a disclaimer, however, so I did not post the link.

Didn't they have to literally turn out the lights in the rink to get them to stop?

Two classics above:

One involves the Maine Mariners, at the time a Flyers farm team, and I believe that Mike Emrick describing the action.

Then a classic North Stars - Blackhawks one from the early 80's ... Dino, savard, Plett, Secord .
