He's a good first line player, but can't carry a team...more physically talented than Kovalchuk
I won't say he's more physically talented. Rather, his scouting report said he is more physical and uses his good size well. He supposedly has a skillset comparable to Kovalchuk, but didn't show the proper hockey sense/desire to score. Hopefully, he's cured that. He was arguably the best player in the Q last year (his first in NA) and has looked very good after a slow first 6 games in Milwaukee.
Here's what RussianProspects.com has to say about him...
Timofei had a comparable skill set to that of Kovalchuk, but “the difference between Kovalchuk and Shishkanov is the hunger, Kovalchuk wants all the time desperately [to] score goals, but Shishkanov sometimes floats around.” The observer added further that Kovalchuk shot the puck a lot more then Shishkanov, while Shishkanov seemed “meaner, more unpredictable and stronger then Kovalchuk”. The main area where Shishkanov loses to players of Kovalchuk’s class is in his hockey sense. He still has not developed that knack for making split second decisions on the ice that players of Kovalchuk’s caliber possess.
The knock on him besides the above and the reason he fell to us in the second round was this...
The other Timofei (saying he has two sides) is the guy who displayed a complete lack of character when playing for Spartak’s junior team.” A European scout also added to Hockey News that “If you saw him on Spartak’s second team…he doesn’t work. He doesn’t try.”
