Wild Like Alex Henry

wow, I didn't know!

"The 6-5, 220-pound defenceman has played a strong physical game and quickly adapted to the Wild's system.

Head coach Jacques Lemaire says Henry has became one of the team's top three defencemen. "

Good for Alex

Agreed. The best thing that happened to him was getting out of Washington, which is not a good organization at this time. Henry plays for a great coach, who constantly puts young players into roles that are designed to have them succeed.

Too bad. I really liked what I saw of him in his time here. Wasn't he pretty similar to Cross? Anyway, I was disappointed that he went.

It seems the Oilers lost a lot of potential d-men in that type of role. Looking back a couple years their have been a ton of good young cheap guys - Buetenschon, Rierden, DeVries (at the time), etc. But the well hasn't run dry.

Let's not forget that the Wild play a very stingy defensive system, and that the defensemen get a lot of help.

One thing Henry was never bad at was clearing the net, and winning battles in the corner.

His main problem has always been terrible foot speed, and in Minnesota, he very rarely finds himself in a position where it is a factor. He is also absolutely brutal with the puck, and has a very tough time making more than a 10 foot pass.

Every time I think about that and get sad, I remember that all of those guys eventually wound up in the 4-7 spot (except for DeVries right now?). I think it only proves that there's an abundance of mediocre-to-average dmen in the league; I don't follow any team anywhere near as closely as I do the Oilers, but I bet you see a lot of movement in those spots from all teams.

That being said, Reirden and Henry certainly had size going for them.

(IIRC, Reirden also had a wicked shot, if it would only stay on-net.)
