TOR/WSH Idea...

The Leafs would love to add an offensive defencman and the Caps need to cut salary and get younger, so my idea is...

To WSH
-Maxim Kondratiev, D (Potential to be a great defencman in this league someday)
-Karel Pilar, D (Solid depth defenceman that could help out the Caps defensive depth problems)
-Kyle Wellwood, C (Was great in juniors, but yet has to prove himself)

To TOR
-Sergei Gonchar, D (Norris Trophy Candiante, Offensive Defenceman)
-Owen Fussey, RW (Could become a solid 3rd or 4th line crasher)

What do you guys think?

methinks it will take more than that to get Gonchar alone. try Matt Stajan instead of Wellwood, and a better d-man than Pilar.

By far the worst offer for Gonchar yet.Give up a top 5 NHL defenseman and a potential 2nd/3rd liner for 3 marginal prospects....Can I get a puff of what you are hitting?

Caps arent looking to salary dump Gonchar, they may trade him but your going to have to over pay for him. Gonchar is actually payed less then what he's worth.

That is probably overpaying, but is close.

But if you were moving those prospects you'd probably want a prospect back as well.

Doesn't make sense from the Leafs position, Gonchar isn't the difference between winning or losing a round, he's only managed to get by the first round once in his career.

Question would be how long is he under contract for. He'll be 30 next year and 31 during the lockout. You might be renting him for the rest of this season.

Okay, as long as you've spelt Colliachivo's name correctly, no idea who he is.

Seriously though, McPhee has stated that he's not getting rid of Gonchar. The first deal favoured the Leafs heavily and the above one hurts them. Colaiacovo, Stajan & Steen is overpaying, and you're given a great deal of Toronto's future away for a player who'll be available to anyone after next season.

Now way in hell Steen and Colaiacovo are going anywhere for any player in 1 deal

Players ranging from Kolzig to Lang to Bondra and then Gonchar will be made available IF the Caps cannot deal Jagr. If they become convinced that they are stuck with Jagr, I suspect the Caps will deal their veterans.

All potential salary dumps are on hold until the case of the largest potential salary dump of them all on the Capitals' roster is decided.

If Jagr can be traded, I doubt the Caps will deal Gonchar. They may still deal Bondra, they may deal Nylander, they may deal Kolzig. The fates of Lang and Gonchar, however, are probably tied up in the team's ability to deal Jagr and how much of his contract the Caps are picking up if he is dealt.

All else, in terms of big contracts, is pretty much on hold until some kind of resolution on Jagr's case. Dump Jagr, and some of the other veterans may be retained.

Granted. Wellwood and Kondratiev were both selected 2+ rounds AFTER Fussey.Pilar is basically waiver wire fodder.Unless Wellwood and Kondra experienced Gretzkeyesque progression since the 2001 draft, the proposal is a joke.

This is the most egregious overstatement I've read in awhile.

A soon to be 26 year old defenseman with 3 seasons of NHL experience, amassing 45 games on a team with a notoriously bad blueline.....yes, waiver wire fodder.

Karel is playing extremely well this season... you should watch him play before saying he's "waiver wire fodder".

He's played 5 out of 23 games, perhaps if he saw himself play, I'd be able to watch him play too.

Pilar played 6 games (7 points) with the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs and was called up to the NHL where he's played 5 games or so.

He was cleared to play hockey October 28th.

---

Karel was drafted in 2001 as he was named the top defenseman in the Czech league.

Thats not exactly his fault. When he was healthy enough to play, he went on his conditioning stint to the AHL, lit up (7 pts in 6 games), and has been improving every game since being back in the NHL.

What do you guys think?
trading jagr ($11M/yr), kolzig ($6M/yr), lang ($5.5M/yr) or bondra ($5M/yr) will be salary dump, and Wash may settle for cheap players and/or unproven prospect
trading gonchar ($3.6M/yr) will be a hockey decision, and Wash wont and shouldnt settle for anything less than proven players and/or blue chip prospect
