Mike "The Punching Bag" Johnson appreciation thread

You gotta feel bad for this guy. Not only does he eat knees and elbows all the time, but he also eats pucks to the head, sticks to the hands, etc. Has anyone noticed this? He's as unlucky with those as Bulis was great at missing open nets. It says a lot.

The guy is just so unlucky but keeps getting back up and playing hard for us.

He pays the price every single game, it's amazing...if you could get a whole team of Mike Johnsons you'd be pretty well set.

He's a good guy. I'm glad we have him and I hope we sign him long term.

I love having Johnson on our team. The guy plays with a ton of heart and puts it all on the line each game.

Johnson is built like a tank, maybe we need some nickname for him ending with "train".

He's ok. Perfect third line guy. Doesn't like to get hit at all, but he as good speed, can make a pass and has an underated shot.

He is a good third liner, and thats fine with me.

The hit he took tonight, i could see eric cole all over again. I saw it on tvu so it wasn't great, but when you saw him cut back, you knew he could be in trouble. Luckily he wasn't hurt.

He is a warrior and a key to the Habs penalty kill. I really hope he signs a 2 or 3 year extension somtime during the year.

I wouldn't sign him longterm. I'd much rather get someone tougher. This team still gets pushed around and it's getting tiresome.

Is this a joke?

Johnson is hands down the grittiest guy on the team not named Begin.

No way. Does not like the corners, will never go in first.

He's a solid, two-way player, but this team is just not gritty/tough enough. It's not Johnson's fault, but he doesn't help in that category either.

I wouldn't call him Soft, but I wouldn't really call Johnson gritty either. Latendresse would rank second on the team amongst forwards for grit to me, unless you count guys like Murray and Downey.

The general knock against him has traditonally been he is too soft, but he is a very good third liner if youare looking for skill and speed, not if you are looking for physical involvement.

Agreed, that's the only thing i'd say I dislike about Johnson...he doesn't like to get hit and usually puts himself in an akward position when he is about to get hit

I do like his vision and his smarts though. And his speed keeps him in good position pretty much all the time. Solid player.

Ehum...

Are we talkin' about the same guy...

Anyways, I noticed the same thing, It seems like every time there's a big hit delivered, he's on the receiving hand. If it stays like that he's not going to get to the playoff in one piece.

He's the kind of player that fits well in a team like Buffalo or Edmonton.

I wish he threw more big hits.... I think he has at least the potential to be a Begin-type player with a little more skill, but Begin clearly has more heart. That said, for a 3rd liner I don't think we could have asked for better than Johnson... he has been really solid.

Am I the only one here to think he's got a bum shoulder or a bad back, and that's why he's always going down in a heap of pain?

I must be watching a different Habs team, because I can swear that He pounces on the puck in the corner if its between him and the other guy..he'll play the puck and take the hit to keep the possesion... i've seen this alot from Him and Perez actually...i'd say he's pretty gritty

Johnson has become one of my favorite player on the team.I just love his work ethic and intelligent way of playing.I also hope that he sign with us after then end of the season.A 2 or 3 years contract would be great.

Definitively an improvement over Jan "Top Six" Bulis

Not sure how many guys actually LIKE to get hit. Can't say i think Johnson is afraid to get hit if that is what you are implying. Guy plays a good game in my books. Can't see what there is to complain about.
