None of them. July 1st is a LONG way away.

This team just has to try and fill the roster every night and play this season out. Then we'll worry about free agency.

There are too many unknowns right now to accurately assess the needs of the team come summertime.

Play your young defense for the whole grind and figure out of four of these are real NHL defensemen: Timonen, Picard, Meyer, Jones, Jonsson.

If four are then you go get Jason Blake and Ray Whitney.

If not then you gotta sign D.

It is not only a situation of "who" but "how much." There will be competing offers from other teams looking to enhance their rosters and available salary cap space will play a huge factor in determining next season's lineups. The Flyers have to be cognizant of that fact even with the increase to the max. It is too early to play a serious game of restructuring for next season. Kim Johnsson (concussion and eventual contract) is an example of that. A lot can happen from now until the end of the season.

well i hope from a flyers POV that they dont forsberg back. eve if he does play better and fix his skate issue. unless he signs for around 3 mil a year its not worth it. then i think that it is imprtant to le all the young guys play and then fill the rest of the line up FA. i f we do this we are only going to have a few spots open allowing us to get some real big names that are young as well. none of this injury bull **** anymore.

Yes, next summer if he retires. You can't just pick up a first line playmaking centre in early December for nothing.

ya i mean for next year. i dont care if he retires or not though, a guy who plays 30-40 games a season has no room on my team. unless he signs for 1-3mil

At this point I don't think he would have a leg to stand on (pun intended) to argue for more than $3-4 million. If we could sign a top centre and Forsberg (depending on how much money is around this summer) I think we'd be set. Of course one or two defensemen are necessary as well.

Agreed. 2 quality d-men would make a huge difference.

2 top 6 forwards would be nice to bring in and compliment the young guys. i'd like to see Gomez come in.

my opinion on forsberg is see how he finishes the year. i think if he goes out on an injured note to the end the season, cut the ties with him. we already got burned on Primeau, let's not over-look possible acquisitions hoping that he may play a full 80 games some year.

What about bringing in a tough vet as a mentour to these young players. What would it cost us to get Gary Roberts? We have a team with 9 starters with less than 3yrs NHL experience! Carter, Richards, Eager,Picard, Nitty,Potulny, (Timonen/Jonson/Jones), Pitkanen,Umberger. That's a young team.

I'd rather not. We've got Knuble in that role. At this point the team needs consistent scoring. I think Roberts is pretty close to being done.

with Joe N. retiring in Florida this past week i think this could be the last year Roberts is playing, or if he does stick around expect him to be in a leafs uniform.

bringing in a guy close to 40 would do absolutely nothing besides take away ice time from a prospect.

This would be my plan for the offseason. We bring back a guy like Wes Walz to anchor our checking line with Fedoruk and Eager. We bring in a winger like Vyacheslav Kozlov to play on the wing with Richards and Sanderson. We then sign a guy like Marco Sturm to play on the wing with Umberger and Carter and then sign Scott Gomez to play on the top line with Gagne and Knuble. The good news is that kids like Potulny, Ruzicka, Downie, Giroux, etc....aren't rushed into spots on the forward lines when they aren't quite ready.

As for the defense, we take a look at signing someone like Scott Hannan. I like the young defense we currently have. They're only going to get better. Picard looks like he's going to be a good PP point man, Jones has greatly improved his play since the start of the season, Meyer has done the same as Jones. The problem with Pitkanen right now is a mental thing that needs to be addressed. Add Gauthier into the mix and we've got an alright D core that will continue to get better.

Finally, the last piece of the puzzle is a goaltender. As much as I like Niitty, he's brittle and that worries me. For the second year in a row, he's going to undergo a surgery. Both hips have been surgically put back together. When you think of how a labrum acts, that's going to affect his mobility and flexibility. Sorry, we need a healty and strong goalie. J-S Giguere would be my choice. He's big, flexible and we could probably get him at a decent rate. No way does he get Brodeur or Luongo type money. He solidifies the position and we don't have to worry about whether surgically repaired hips can hold up.

I would like any of the players from this list, and also Rafalski, Hannan, Phillips, or Doan (if he is not totally destroyed physically). I would be happy with one forward and one d-man from this group, and some depth signings. Keep the best young guys up and grow this team.

Vitaly Vishnevski, Wayne Primeau, Biron and maybe Bertuzzi if he is healthy.
Vishnevsky 2M, Primeau 1M, Bert around 2-3M, Biron around2.5. If possible trade for Morris. Maybe move Hatcher or Gauthier
Thats all...

This would be great. I would sign a top center to play with Gagne/Knuble, resign Forsberg and put hm on the wing with Carter/Umberger.

Wayne Primeaus is getting completely trashed over on the Boston board. If he is half as bad as they say, I dont want him. ALthough I do think we need a checking center.

My ideas:

Phillips (6.5)
Kenny Jonsson (3.5) (will finally return to NHL, Olympic and World championship winner last season)

Forsberg (5.0)
Scott Hartnell (3.5)
Jorgen Jonsson (1.0, brother to Kenny, Olympic and Worlds winner)

Gagne - Forsberg - Knuble
Sanderson - Carter - Umberger
Eager - Richards - Hartnell
Fedoruk - Jonsson - Downie
Potulny (25.0)

Pitkänen - Phillips
Jonsson - Gauthier
Hatcher - Meyer
Jones (19.5)

Niittymäki + (1.5)

Rory Fitzpatrick!!

In all seriousness, though, here are my top choices...

D:

Kimmo Timonen, Vitaly Vishnevski, Scott Hannan, Sami Salo, Sheldon Souray

F:

First tier: Daniel Briere (I've wanted him since his days in Phoenix, but you know the Sabres will do everything possible to keep him in Buffalo), Pavel Datsyuk, Peter Forsberg (if he can resolve the menacing foot/skate issue), Scott Gomez

Second tier: Jason Blake, Ladislav Nagy, Shane Doan, Dainius Zubrus, Petr Sykora, Ryan Smith

Third tier: Tyler Arnason, Derek Armstrong, Mike Johnson, Chris Simon

Defensive forward/PK player: Jay Pandolfo, Wes Walz, Vladimir Orszagh (if he decides to return to the NHL)

G:

Fredrik Norrena

IMO he is max $4, but who knows what will happen. There are a lot of FA dmen next year so maybe that will drive the price down. All depends on how much the first one signs for.

As for JS Giguere, what makes you think he will not command Luongo money if he continues to have the season he has now and is successful in the playoffs? With that, and the fact that he is really the ONLY legit #1 out there next year, I think he is going to be overpaid.
