The Rangers are not contesting the diagnosis of a Colorado orthopedist that D Sandis Ozolinsh has inflammation in his surgically repaired knee and needs two or three weeks of rehab. They have placed him on IR, planning to again assign him to Hartford when he is cleared to play. Until then, Ozolinsh's $2.75-million salary will continue to count against the Rangers' salary cap.
What the HELL do we have to do to get rid of this guy. We couldn't dish him for a used puck bag, let alone Waive him! To think of all the good hope I had for this guy. Get better so we can stop caring about your health again dammit!
Eh...it just seems like the inevitable gets delayed, and that once he he gets cleared, he gets sent to Hartford. So, for three weeks, the Rangers have less room to make a deal.
This situation has been festering ever since Ozolinsh was placed on waivers
Last week

No, the Rangers are not simply rolling over and accepting the disgraceful claim of Sandis Ozolinsh and his agent, Paul Theofanous, that left knee discomfort is preventing the 34-year-old defenseman from accepting his waiver assignment to the AHL Wolf Pack.
The Post has learned that the front office is dispatching Ozolinsh to Colorado to undergo a full examination and evaluation by Dr. William G. Clancy Jr., the orthopedist who performed the reconstructive surgery on the defenseman following last season.
Depending upon the results of the exam, the Rangers will consider filing a grievance or suspending the $2.75M Ozolinsh, who is believed to have first complained about his knee when management insisted he report to Hartford more than a week after he cleared waivers on Dec. 19
Ozolinsh has to report to Hartford or the Rangers have to suspend him and he doesn't get paid.Ozolinsh comes up with his BS story about the knee preventing him from playing in order to get paid and not report to Hartford
Theofanous also represents Michael Nylander and Thomas Pock.Does the agent really want to piss off the Rangers?Ozolinsh could have reported to Hartford and then claimed his knee was bothering him but the Ozolinsh camp didn't pursue that option

Less room to make a deal might be a blessing in disguise
I don't want to be a detractor however not really a fan either. He has had his problems and they are not the kind that a 34 y.o. professional athlete recovers from easily. Lets say he reports, he has cleared waivers and can move on. It is what it is. Not too many of us would give up 1/2 year salary no matter what happened. Let him move on, maybe Fishies??
How much does anyone want to bet that Ozilinsh will be back on the Rangers blue-line in about 5 weeks? We should just expect it..with this organization. I can hear it now....."Well, it turns out he was injured, so let see what he can do now."
I don't see how this goes against the NYR cap in any way because he is currently on IR pending further diagnosis and he will either remain on IR for the rest of the year thus not being a cap hit or if he ever gets cleared he'd be shipped right down to hartford so either way the remainder of his 2.75 wouldn't be a cap hit.

Nice find Rangerboy. I was hoping someone one give this guy a chance and pick him up on waivers. let him be their problem. I was rooting for him so good, and did like the acquisition at the time, but who woudl have thought it would have been this bad?!?
I dont wish him harm, i just want him to go away.

I didn't have high hopes for the acquisition in the first place, but I definitely didn't expect his presence to painfully linger on and on...
Long term injury reserve only works for clubs at or near the limit. The Rangers are not at or near the limit. With the entire Sandis Ozolinsh cap hit,the Rangers still have more than $1.5 million in available cap space. The Devil situation is totally different. They are at the $44 million limit and are allowed to go over the limit with Alexander Mogilny and Richard Matvichuk on long term IR
Figure Ozolinsh is curedof the inflammation in his knee by January 29-three weeks and the Rangers place him again on waivers(with him reporting this time and if he doesn't report then suspend him),the Rangers would save $1 million of the $2.75 million

Is Sandis a beer guy?The east european drunks are more into harder liquor than beer
In honor of his agent Paul Theofanous from one greek to another,Sandis is an ouzo guy.Ouzo tastes and smells like rubbing alchohol. They add water before drinking it
