I need some help

All right, I need some help identifying a player. My family's season tickets for the Devils are situated a row in front of another season ticket holder. I don't know his name.

I need to find out who the season ticket holder is. Why am I posting this here? Because the season ticket holder wears a Montreal Canadians Stanley Cup Ring. He has told us that he played for the team but won't tell us when or his name.

So, from the clues that he has given us and some conversations that I've overheard, I've gathered the following information:

- He looks to be about 50 years old. Maybe a little older.
- His first name is Jeff.
- He was born in or near Buffalo
- He may have gone to Cornell
- He played defense.
- He won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens.
- He now lives in or near New Jersey.

Can you guys help me out?

Only three players named Jeff played for the habs, none of them won Cups.

Indeed, the only Jeffs to suit up ever for the Habs are:
Jeff Hackett
Jeff Brubaker
Jeff Teal

Maybe it's Geoff? Geoffrey?

That would be a pretty expensive lie. That ring is pretty shiny.

I tried searching for that right after I saw there were only 3 Jeff's. There are no Geoffs or Geoffreys for the Habs. As others have speculated, it might have been his father's or uncle's or something like that. Or I mean... every now and then, Cup rings are in fact sold by their former owners. It doesn't happen too too often, and they are very expensive, but it happens.

The only American who even remotely fits that description in terms of age, position and who has one a cup with the Habs is Rod Langway.

Well, maybe he's not lying...

- He won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens.

Didn't say he played for them, maybe he was a trainer, or the towel boy or something.

Well I did some sleuthing. Assuming he gave you a fake name (not unlikely since he won't tell you anything else about him), I got these four candidates given the criteria Defenseman, won with Habs as a player, born near Buffalo or connection to Buffalo, connection to New Jersey, age 40-60. I searched through the Cup teams from 1968 through 1986, and this is what I got:

Jim Roberts: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...3?pid=00010168
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Rob...ckey_player%29
- age 66
- born in Toronto
- Won cup with Montreal 5 times (65,66,73,76,77)
- Coached in Hartford, then Buffalo
- no connection to New Jersey

Steve Rooney: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...3?pid=00004657
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rooney
- age 44
- Born in Massachusetts
- Won cup with Montreal in 1986
- His last NHL team was the New Jersey Devils
- no connection to Buffalo

Mike Lalor: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...3?pid=00002925
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Lalor
- age 43
- Born in Fort Erie, Ontario (near Buffalo)
- Won cup with Montreal in 1986
- no connection to New Jersey

Rod Langway: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000451979.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Langway
http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/halloffame/langway.html
- age 49
- Grew up in Massachusetts, went to University of New Hampshire
- Won cup with Montreal in 1979
- Traded to Capitals where he won Norris twice
- Coached in Richmond, VA (Riverdogs) for one season (03-04)

If it is actually his ring, I'd bet on Mike Lalor of these four guys.

If you have gotten a good look at his ring, this page has a few examples that might help you narrow down the era.
http://www.tmlfever.com/StanleyCupRings.html

The 1986 ring has 23 diamonds on it (one for each cup up until then). Sorry, no picture.
This is the 1973 ring: edit: This is a reproduction requested by Guy Lafleur, so might not be exactly the same

This is the 1976 ring: edit: This is a reproduction requested by Guy Lafleur, so might not be exactly the same

This is the 1979 ring: edit: This is a reproduction requested by Guy Lafleur, so might not be exactly the same

This is the Andre Savard's 1993 ring.. lol:

Apparently Lafleur either lost, or just doesn't have any of his rings anymore...

For those who are saying he might have bought it, each of these rings are selling/have sold for US$10-20,000.

It's gotta be Jimmy Roberts. He played for both the Habs and Sabres, coached under Bowman in Buffalo and won a few Cups with the Canadiens.

Was he on the short side? If yes, it's gotta be JR.

He definately looks a lot like Langway. I think that it just might be him.

He's also famous enough that I can understand why he wouldn't want to give me his real name. He'd be mobbed for autographs.

Pretty cool. Thanks guys.
