GDT - 12/16/06: Blues vs. Preds

vs

Who: Predators vs. St. Louis Blues.

Where: Gaylord Entertainment Center.

When: 7 p.m.

TV: None(Nashville) KPLR (Channel 11)
Radio: 560-AM, KTRS (550 AM)

Season series: Predators lead 1-0.

Blues storyline: St. Louis has lost nine straight games following Wednesday's defeat in Colorado. The Blues have the fewest points (18) and goals (68) in the NHL. St. Louis is playing its third game with Coach Andy Murray. The Blues outshot the Preds 42-17 on Nov. 30 in a 5-4 loss to Nashville. Left wing Keith Tkachuk leads the Blues with 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists), while right wing Bill Guerin has a team-best 12 goals. Neither Bill Guerin nor Bryce Salvador practiced Friday. Coach Andy Murray said Guerin had a bruise and wouldn't specify where, but said the right winger will play against Nashville. Salvador, according to Murray, had a family issue to handle. He is expected to be in the lineup tonight. The Blues seek to end a nine-game losing streak

Predators storyline: Nashville is 8-0-3 at home since losing its season opener here to Chicago. The Predators have nine straight victories over the Blues. Right wing J.P. Dumont has five assists in his last two games and left wing Paul Kariya has four assists in his last two. Rookie right wing Alexander Radulov has three goals in his last four games and is second on the team with 10 goals overall. They have been getting healthy lately, and it's making a difference. David Legwand scored the winning goal in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Edmonton after missing three games because of an arm injury. Steve Sullivan posted a natural hat trick, in 5:56, in a 6-0 win over Ottawa after sitting out two games because of a groin injury. Also in that game, center Jason Arnott had two assists following an 11-game absence with a knee injury

Blues injuries: G Curtis Sanford (groin) and RW Vladimir Orszagh (knee) are out; G Manny Legace (head) is questionable.

Predators injuries: RW Scottie Upshall (groin) and G Tomas Vokoun (thumb) are out; RW Jordin Tootoo (illness) is questionable

KEY STAT: 11 — Days since goaltender Manny Legace has played for the Blues. He was out eight days because of a head injury but will start tonight.

Let me summarize by quoting the Blues PBP guy,

"This is the best the Blues have looked since that last Nashville game"

Goal 1 - Dumont half-heartedly chases Tkachuk down, allowing him to go end-to-end. Hamhuis has position, but rather than playing the body, meekly waves his stick, Tkachuk muscles around him, holds, holds, Mason goes down, Tkachuk roofs it, unmolested.

Goal 2 - Zanon clears the puck down the ice, and in a freak occurence(that happened once before to us, as I recall) it goes over the end glass behind Legace to give the Blues a 5 on 3. We look good on the kill for the most part, Murray calls a time out, they run a set play, win the faceoff back to Wideman, who dishes over to Weight, who one-times it through Mason's five-hole.

Power play is looking for the perfect pass again. Kariya has whiffed on a couple one-timer attempts(really wondering what the deal is with that. The best chance of the night came on a two on one in which Radulov probably should have shot rather than pass. He got it through to Vasicek, but big Joe did nothing with it.

As we speak, we're on the power play, and we're trying SO HARD to get that back door pass, and the Blues have the lanes clogged perfectly, so we're playing catch.

I've seen the last two powerplays, and they look terrible.

For the third straight game, Timonen has, at least once, let a puck passed back to him at the point go right through his stick and down the ice for an unforced clear.

As we speak, the Blues have gone into a full trap mode, and we're not getting the puck after dumping\chasing.

Dumont is playing possibly his worst game as a Predator, though outside of Legwand and Radulov, none of our forwards are playing well, either, so it's hard to single him out.

Good things happen when you put the puck on net. We've not done that this game, hopefully this sparks a philosophical change. Though we of course gave up a huge scoring chance immediately after we scored.

Oddly, I think our best chance to tie this game up is shorthanded.

Honestly, I have a thick skin about this sort of thing, I know all commentators are homers to a degree,

but for the second game in a row, these Blues PBP guys have done NOTHING but whine about the reffing. Every call against the Blues is weak, every bit of contact on the Preds part is a "horrible missed call."

I'm considering muting the third, I can't take this. Hopefully we get P and T back for tomorrow's game.

Have you listened to Eli and Jim? I haven't listened to them yet and was wondering how they are doing so far.

I've had it muted for quite awhile now. I turn it up to hear their take on the replay, and all I get is " WHat a horrible non-call. THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SLASHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!1111!1!!1"

Great job by Nichol - HUGE goal.

Don't you have a game to be calling?

Why was Nichol moved on to the line with Hartnell and Vasicek?

Why is Nichol out with Sullivan, in OT?

WOW, Timonen with one of the best defensive plays I've ever seen him make. Perfect to get to the puck first.
