I don't think he's cheap, after all, he's one of the most respected guys in the league. He's fought many times. He shouldn't be anymore because of the major shoulder surgery. He's practically done with fighting.

I think some of the backlash on Roberts stems from the fact that he'll occasionally board a guy pretty dangerously even though his career almost ended with his neck injuries.

Claude Lemieux
Jarko Ruutu
Matt Cooke
Tkachuk or Weight (both of them can't keep their sticks down! I forgot which one nailed Walz last year ugh!)
Forsberg (STOP DIVING! UGH! This isn't a freaking pool even though it's water! Wait a moment...uhhh what kind of dirty?)
Savard the Cannibal (hehehe just kidding! That's freaking funny though!)
Hartnell or Upshall (taking out Lidstrom with a dirty hit)

Past players:
Ulf Samuelsson (thanks for ending Neely's career you idiot!)
Dale Hunter (I liked him but ugh!)
Marty McSorely (Another guy I liked but wow!)

Laugahble yourself. I'm referring to the fact that the guys he picks to hit are smaller, skill players. A la Pavol Demitra and Markus Naslund.

I'm not arguing he's respected. I have tons of respect for him, he's a warrior. I still find his game cheap. He takes a lot of picks at guys and never backs up his smack. Just my opinion.

Isn't that what your supposed to do. What do you think he's just going to give them a clear path to the net. I'm surprised one name hasn't come up (not that I think he's dirty) but Scott Stevens. Mostly bitter fans but there always seems like one in the crowd that will complain about his play.

Ruutu has done a few cheap things. What do you think gets people so angry :p.

The fact is, these were questionable(and late) hits. I'm bitter because the Naslund one was late and dirty, and he never seems to try and lay those hits out on guys his own size. He always goes after the smaller ones. That's just my feeling on it, and I haven't seen anything from him to show me different.

Roberts has had two fights so far that I can think of. That is hardly 'never backing up his smack'.
"Guys like (Gary)Roberts wouldn't be scoring 50 goals if guys like Sandy McCarthy weren't there to back them up. He'd spend a lot more time getting punched in the head."--Gino Odjick, 1994 Playoffs

I realize that Odjick isn't exactly an angel himself, but Roberts plays a chippy game and doesn't back up his smack nearly as much as a guy who uses his stick and his mouth that often should. That's just my opinion, and I've had that opinion of Roberts since the '94 Playoffs.

just a thought but if roberts was a nuck i bet you'd have a differing opionion of him...you talk of him but it seems you've hardly ever seen him play. He hits em all big and small and for a guy who came back from career ending neck surgery i for one am suprised he still has the gusto! trust me, hes a guy every team wishes needs. Pure heart. he leads by example not talkin 'smack' like some of the yappy squirts in the league (Savard, Barnaby, Webb).

it's good to see Ruutu get some of this kind of recognition. before this season people would only know Ruutu as "one of Tuomo's brothers". if he's getting nominations for the dirtiest player in the league, then he's doing his job and panning out to what we hoped he would be.

Jarkko Ruutu really has an unfair reputation as a cheap player. He really isn't.

I have no problem saying other Canucks players are, but I don't think Ruutu is. Cooke is borderline and there are a few x-Canucks who fit this catergory. My list:

1. Keith Tkachuk- Yaps and only backs it up with his stick.
2. Chris Chelios- The worst for stick work. Small guy uses his stick for leverage.
3. Owen Nolan- See Tkachuk.
4. Kirk Maltby- Very unclean player.
5. Bill Guerin- Anger problem, stick-work
6. Bryan Marchment- Has dropped on the list but is still there.
7. Doug Weight- NEVER backs himself up (other than slashes/cross-checks)
8. Darcy Tucker- He has done some stupid things
9. Derien Hatcher- Too many hits from behind and stick work for such a big guy.
10. Willie Mitchell- And climbing fast...

I have nothing against these guys and think they play their parts well, just answering the question.

I see Roberts play plenty; CBC crams the Leafs down all of Canada's throat. The Canucks have players who do the same thing as Roberts, namely Matt Cooke. I know Roberts is a warrior and I'd love him on my team, that doesn't make me not think that Roberts is a cheap player. He is.

Actually I just never watched that game-aside from the last 5 minutes with the game-ending scrap. So I didn't forget the incident-was never even aware it happened I still don't think Ruutu deserves mention with guys like Marchment, Hill and Shanahan (how has no one mentioned him??). Ruutu does things like diving, lipping off the other team, using some very "odd" gestures...but I cannot recall him taking things too far and trying to injure anyone-the Yelle incident aside. BTW, do you have a link to that hit? I'd like to see for myself-not that I don't trust you Lappy

Thalia-my Arvedson comment was more based on his Ottawa days-Arvedson uses his stick-sometimes without thinking. He can be pretty dirty, and I believe he also did a knee-on-knee hit a year or so ago-can't remember who. He's behaved mostly thus far in Vancouver though. Maybe he's changed his ways?

Heh, the hit is what precipitated the scrap in the first place.

I doubt you'll be able to find video of it considering it happened 2 years ago. I'm looking but I don't think I'll be able to find any. Here's a box score though.

Code:
G De Vries, Col (roughing), 13:09
Ruutu, Van (kneeing major, game misconduct), 13:09
Parker, Col (instigator, fighting major, game misconduct), 13:09
Jovanovski, Van (fighting major), 13:09
T Bertuzzi, Van ( game misconduct), 13:09.

I guess I didn't really see the fight then either-must have only seen the replay. Wouldn't they have shown the kneeing hit as well? I really have a bad memory.

You're kidding right?

I'd ask you to name one player not named Sedin that he has EVER slashed, but I know you couldn't answer it so I won't even bother asking. You put him on your list based on one play because it happened against one of your team's players and it has your panties in a bunch. Get a clue.

BTW... that player that never backs himself up just got in a fight on Friday night.
