Yay! More money to spend on renaming streets now! SCORE!!!

On an aside, is it just me or is Montreal trying to make it impossible to travel in general? Parking price increases...Transit fare increases + changing the system to be even more expensive...

Why is Montreal so crappy at managing money? Everything is backwards here! It's the Bizzaro land!

It's called CORRUPTION. It's why I will never live here permanently again. They always have the language thing to distract people too, so it'll never stop. Corruption is everywhere, but 43% combined taxes is not.

you know, id almost think that, but the more i hear about the way the public functions operate, i attribute it to incompetence.

i bet if they got rid the ridiculous unions they have, people would get in gear and get **** going a LOT more efficiently.

we should protest unions at the city level.

There's some of that too. But I'm not anti-union in general. People don't get paid what they are worth as it is: nurses, teachers, etc.

The problem is kickbacks and people pocketing money, as per usual. Quebec has a long, illustrious history of that (hidden largely by the language thing).

It's funny what you say about pocketing money...A family friend recently was elected as a municipal MP and it just shocked me how much money she makes for the little she actually has to do. She's making so much that she quit her full time job and is living off her salary as MP...Which is a few hours of sitting in meetings per week.

Do small municipalities really need like 5 MPs, PLUS a mayor?

Sounds like here in Toronto.

But to be honest, I'm all for parking increases. Fact is, demand for parking spaces in a downtown core will always be far greater than supply, and keeping a low price just increases the amount of congestion, frustration and pollution. Look no further than London pre-tolls, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Sure but it also completely screws me over, because public transit is not an option for me. I can't afford $3 an hour parking either, so I'm not quite sure what to do.

A columnist in Montreal calculated that 12 hours of parking at the new rate costs the same as one parking ticket, so I figure I'll just take the ticket.

Join 'em, lynch 'em or leave 'em. I'm going for the latter. Socialism is good for one thing, it gave me an education that made me smart enough to know I have to leave.

It happens everywhere. I've been to Mexico City this summer, and it's a thousan times worse. If you go to Paris or London or New-York or LA or to any bigger metropolis, you'll see that things are more expensive, that transit is more expensive, that coffee costs 10 euros, etc. We don't have it that bad.

I agree. And if it was up to me, I would ban cars in big cities to increase the mass transit's size and effectiveness. We have to stop crapping on the head of mother earth...

I have love for my fellow Montrealers, but I ain't staying here. Corruption is everywhere, but you don't pay 43-47% taxes everywhere. And the inflation isn't like it is here everywhere. And you have jobs and real salaries elsewhere too. It's better than it was in the 70s and 80s and early 90s, but these politichiens really need to be reeled in.

We do have it bad when we pay more in taxes but in the end receive less.

Particularly the roads, which were nickle and dimed so much that now the only possible way to fix them is to tear everything down and re-build them.

The habs should play a game there like they did in Edmonton at Commenwealth. That would be unreal. 60,000 fans. They should do it during the 100th year celebration.

What do they use the Big O for now?

Also, how far is it from Mount Tremblay to Montreal(Bell Center)?

I lived in Malaysia for over a year and I can tell you the corruption/time wasting/etc is way worse than here. They also pay tolls all over the place and their roads are built like crap. Oh and cops /goverment officials accept bribes all the time (including from me where I had to bribe a cop to not get taken to court for driving without my license)

Well I guess we can all be proud that as bad as Montreal can be, at least it's not Malaysia!

Well of course it doesn't mean we shouldn't complain.. but it can put things in perspective. Humans are flawed, anywhere you go. Greed and power drives humans and it will never change.

Canada has one of the highest standard of living in the world. We have higher taxes than the US, but at the same time our taxes are lower than in France, even if we benificiate of a great social system, free health care, free education. On top of that, the state doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the roads in Montréal : it's because of the micro-climate, which is hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold, which destroys the concrete, the roads...
