Yet another flukey win for the Habs tonight. Sabres had a key goal called back due to an unfortunate lifting of the goalpost.
The Habs' first goal came off the rebound of a horribly missed shot, the second goal off a REALLY lucky deflection from no angle, the third goal would never have happened if Steve Begin hadn't been hurt, the fourth goal was another lucky deflection and the fifth goal came immediately after what should have been a penalty to the Sabres for illegal contact with another Sabres player.
Furthermore, the Sabres would have won easily if not for many flukey saves by the Montreal goalie who was one of the two throw-ins in the Mathieu Garon giveaway; the other throw-in in that deal, Radek Bonk, is fortunate to be playing well in his contract negotiation year.
Speaking of negotiations and the General Manager, Bob Gainey clearly is very lucky to get the results he is getting considering that he shouldn't have fired Claude Julien, miscalculated in acquiring Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Samsonov, Mike Johnson and Garth Murray, blundered in the Ninimaa trade, gave away Richard Zednik, Jose Theodore, and Pierre Dagenais, let last year's only four-goal-in-a-game scorer, Jan Bulis, go to the rival Canucks, and stupidly allowed himself to be influenced by fans who wanted to see a native tender 19-year-old who can't skate, pass or score make the team over blue-Chipchura prospects.
To keep from falling out of the playoff race, Gainey should immediately trade Koivu, Higgins, Ryder and Huet for Fedorov, Forsberg, Nieuwendyk and Leclair. Then at least we'd have a shot at 8th place.

I was about to freak out at you after reading the first sentence...But then I read the rest.
We were definitely shaky early in the game. But the Sabres were so flat, they let us work our way back into the flow. This is definitely not the same Buffalo team we played earlier in the year. They can play better than that.
But this was one of those turning point games for a team. I think Montreal will take away a LOT from this game. I personally believe in this team now. We are definitely contenders.

You're being ironic, aren't you? It wasn't a goal called back. The referees never signaled a goal. The play was automatically reviewed after Higgins scored and was correctly ruled that the net came off its moorings before the puck crossed the line. And even if it had been allowed, the Sabres never scored another whereas the Habs put in one more for good measure. And as for luck, how about the Kovalev shot that whizzed by Miller and clanged off iron?
Not to mention another lucky two points closer to first. We also increased our lucky lead to 8 over the laughs with 2 games in hand. Luckily the Sens are also trailing us.
